| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Gina Chavez has distinguished herself as a member of |

| 6 | 6 | | Austin's world-famous music scene, adding her distinctive voice and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | eclectic songwriting style to the city's lively mix; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native Austinite, Ms. Chavez gained a strong |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | foundation in music at an early age through programs in the Austin |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Independent School District and by participating in school choirs; |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | she went on to rescue her father's 1954 Martin guitar from a closet |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and begin composing original songs; while earning her bachelor's |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | degree in journalism at The University of Texas at Austin, she |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | entered the campus-wide talent show, the Texas Revue, and was one of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the 14 acts selected to play before an audience of 3,000; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Chavez performed with the band Before the Throne |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and further honed her skills on coffeehouse stages; in 2006, she won |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | second place in the annual singer-songwriter contest at Fado Irish |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Pub, and after she completed her debut album, Hanging Spoons, the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | popular venue Momo's hosted her release party; since then, she has |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | been featured regularly at the club, where a growing audience |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | enjoys her blend of folk, blues, Latin, jazz, and other influences; |

| 23 | 23 | | moreover, she has gained listeners through appearances on local |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | television and radio stations; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Always ready for a challenge, Ms. Chavez has made |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | fine showings in several musical competitions; she was a Southwest |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | semifinalist in the Disc Makers' Independent Music World Series in |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | 2007, a monthly Famecast winner in the pop category, and the October |

| 29 | 29 | | 2008 austinmusiccity.com poll winner; in addition, she has |

| 30 | 30 | | represented her hometown in behalf of the Austin Convention and |

| 31 | 31 | | Visitors Bureau, and her song "Embrujo" was included on The Sound is |

| 32 | 32 | | Brown, a compilation CD the bureau produced with the Austin Latino |

| 33 | 33 | | Music Association; and |

| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the |

| 35 | 35 | | World depends on the individuality and talent of its myriad |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | musicians, and Gina Chavez continues to make her own unique |

| 37 | 37 | | contributions; now, therefore, be it |

| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby recognize Gina Chavez for her achievements in |
