44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Gina Chavez has distinguished herself as a member of
66 Austin's world-famous music scene, adding her distinctive voice and
77 eclectic songwriting style to the city's lively mix; and
88 WHEREAS, A native Austinite, Ms. Chavez gained a strong
99 foundation in music at an early age through programs in the Austin
1010 Independent School District and by participating in school choirs;
1111 she went on to rescue her father's 1954 Martin guitar from a closet
1212 and begin composing original songs; while earning her bachelor's
1313 degree in journalism at The University of Texas at Austin, she
1414 entered the campus-wide talent show, the Texas Revue, and was one of
1515 the 14 acts selected to play before an audience of 3,000; and
1616 WHEREAS, Ms. Chavez performed with the band Before the Throne
1717 and further honed her skills on coffeehouse stages; in 2006, she won
1818 second place in the annual singer-songwriter contest at Fado Irish
1919 Pub, and after she completed her debut album, Hanging Spoons, the
2020 popular venue Momo's hosted her release party; since then, she has
2121 been featured regularly at the club, where a growing audience
2222 enjoys her blend of folk, blues, Latin, jazz, and other influences;
2323 moreover, she has gained listeners through appearances on local
2424 television and radio stations; and
2525 WHEREAS, Always ready for a challenge, Ms. Chavez has made
2626 fine showings in several musical competitions; she was a Southwest
2727 semifinalist in the Disc Makers' Independent Music World Series in
2828 2007, a monthly Famecast winner in the pop category, and the October
2929 2008 austinmusiccity.com poll winner; in addition, she has
3030 represented her hometown in behalf of the Austin Convention and
3131 Visitors Bureau, and her song "Embrujo" was included on The Sound is
3232 Brown, a compilation CD the bureau produced with the Austin Latino
3333 Music Association; and
3434 WHEREAS, Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the
3535 World depends on the individuality and talent of its myriad
3636 musicians, and Gina Chavez continues to make her own unique
3737 contributions; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3939 Legislature hereby recognize Gina Chavez for her achievements in
4040 music and extend to her best wishes for continued success; and, be
4141 it further
4242 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4343 prepared for Ms. Chavez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4444 House of Representatives.
