H.R. No. 69 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Gina Chavez has distinguished herself as a member of Austin's world-famous music scene, adding her distinctive voice and eclectic songwriting style to the city's lively mix; and WHEREAS, A native Austinite, Ms. Chavez gained a strong foundation in music at an early age through programs in the Austin Independent School District and by participating in school choirs; she went on to rescue her father's 1954 Martin guitar from a closet and begin composing original songs; while earning her bachelor's degree in journalism at The University of Texas at Austin, she entered the campus-wide talent show, the Texas Revue, and was one of the 14 acts selected to play before an audience of 3,000; and WHEREAS, Ms. Chavez performed with the band Before the Throne and further honed her skills on coffeehouse stages; in 2006, she won second place in the annual singer-songwriter contest at Fado Irish Pub, and after she completed her debut album, Hanging Spoons, the popular venue Momo's hosted her release party; since then, she has been featured regularly at the club, where a growing audience enjoys her blend of folk, blues, Latin, jazz, and other influences; moreover, she has gained listeners through appearances on local television and radio stations; and WHEREAS, Always ready for a challenge, Ms. Chavez has made fine showings in several musical competitions; she was a Southwest semifinalist in the Disc Makers' Independent Music World Series in 2007, a monthly Famecast winner in the pop category, and the October 2008 austinmusiccity.com poll winner; in addition, she has represented her hometown in behalf of the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, and her song "Embrujo" was included on The Sound is Brown, a compilation CD the bureau produced with the Austin Latino Music Association; and WHEREAS, Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World depends on the individuality and talent of its myriad musicians, and Gina Chavez continues to make her own unique contributions; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize Gina Chavez for her achievements in music and extend to her best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Chavez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
