55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, Residents of Williamson County lost a respected
77 court judge and a beloved member of the community with the passing
88 of the Honorable William Sunday Lott on February 11, 2009, at the
99 age of 90; and
1010 WHEREAS, Born on April 28, 1918, to Hervey and Fannie Lott,
1111 William Lott grew up in Amarillo and earned his law degree from The
1212 University of Texas School of Law in 1940; answering his nation's
1313 call to duty during World War II, he served with the U.S. Army
1414 Security Intelligence Corps and was selected to travel to San
1515 Francisco for the conference where the United Nations was
1616 organized; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Lott married the former Ellagene Eanes in 1944,
1818 and the couple were blessed with two children, Cathy and Bill, and
1919 two grandchildren, Ryan and Neal; Mr. Lott served as assistant
2020 attorney general for the State of Texas from 1947 to 1952 and
2121 afterward opened a private law practice in Georgetown; and
2222 WHEREAS, In 1976, he was elected judge of the 26th District
2323 Court of Williamson County; during his 16 years of dedicated
2424 service on the bench, he played a pivotal role in establishing the
2525 county's "tough on crime" reputation; an expert on evidence and
2626 procedure, he was passionate about the law and maintained a strict,
2727 no-nonsense atmosphere in his courtroom; he was instrumental in the
2828 creation of the Central Texas Treatment Center for drug and alcohol
2929 rehabilitation and instituted salient reforms to the county's
3030 juvenile probation system; the county paid tribute to his life and
3131 work in 1986 by naming the William S. Lott Juvenile Center in his
3232 honor; following his retirement from the court in 1992, Judge Lott
3333 continued to share his knowledge and expertise with members of the
3434 court, keeping himself available to fill in as a visiting judge; and
3535 WHEREAS, Judge Lott received numerous accolades in his
3636 distinguished career, including the Man of the Year honor from the
3737 Georgetown Chamber of Commerce in 1979 and a Lifetime Achievement
3838 Award from the Georgetown Area Community Foundation, and he was
3939 elected president of the Williamson County Bar Association; and
4040 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Judge Lott was a director
4141 of First National Bank in Georgetown, a Mason for more than 60
4242 years, and a member of the Georgetown Rotary and Lions Clubs;
4343 moreover, he was a congregant at First United Methodist Church of
4444 Georgetown, where he served as a trustee; he also served on the
4545 regional boards of the Wesleyan Home, the United Way, the American
4646 Cancer Society, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, and the
4747 Georgetown Citizens' Advisory Committee; and
4848 WHEREAS, A quintessential Southern gentleman with a wicked
4949 sense of humor, William Lott served the residents of Williamson
5050 County with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering devotion to
5151 the well-being of his community and its citizens, and all those
5252 fortunate enough to have known him will forever cherish their
5353 memories of this esteemed Texan; now, therefore, be it
5454 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5555 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable William
5656 Sunday Lott and express sincere sympathy to the members of his
5757 family: to his children, Cathy Lott Durr and Bill Hervey Lott and
5858 his wife, Gisela; to his grandchildren, Ryan Travis Lott and Neal
5959 Brandon Lott; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it
6060 further
6161 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6262 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
6363 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judge Lott.
