6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Williamson County lost a respected |
---|
7 | 7 | | court judge and a beloved member of the community with the passing |
---|
8 | 8 | | of the Honorable William Sunday Lott on February 11, 2009, at the |
---|
9 | 9 | | age of 90; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born on April 28, 1918, to Hervey and Fannie Lott, |
---|
11 | 11 | | William Lott grew up in Amarillo and earned his law degree from The |
---|
12 | 12 | | University of Texas School of Law in 1940; answering his nation's |
---|
13 | 13 | | call to duty during World War II, he served with the U.S. Army |
---|
14 | 14 | | Security Intelligence Corps and was selected to travel to San |
---|
15 | 15 | | Francisco for the conference where the United Nations was |
---|
16 | 16 | | organized; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lott married the former Ellagene Eanes in 1944, |
---|
18 | 18 | | and the couple were blessed with two children, Cathy and Bill, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | two grandchildren, Ryan and Neal; Mr. Lott served as assistant |
---|
20 | 20 | | attorney general for the State of Texas from 1947 to 1952 and |
---|
21 | 21 | | afterward opened a private law practice in Georgetown; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 1976, he was elected judge of the 26th District |
---|
23 | 23 | | Court of Williamson County; during his 16 years of dedicated |
---|
24 | 24 | | service on the bench, he played a pivotal role in establishing the |
---|
25 | 25 | | county's "tough on crime" reputation; an expert on evidence and |
---|
26 | 26 | | procedure, he was passionate about the law and maintained a strict, |
---|
27 | 27 | | no-nonsense atmosphere in his courtroom; he was instrumental in the |
---|
28 | 28 | | creation of the Central Texas Treatment Center for drug and alcohol |
---|
29 | 29 | | rehabilitation and instituted salient reforms to the county's |
---|
30 | 30 | | juvenile probation system; the county paid tribute to his life and |
---|
31 | 31 | | work in 1986 by naming the William S. Lott Juvenile Center in his |
---|
32 | 32 | | honor; following his retirement from the court in 1992, Judge Lott |
---|
33 | 33 | | continued to share his knowledge and expertise with members of the |
---|
34 | 34 | | court, keeping himself available to fill in as a visiting judge; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Judge Lott received numerous accolades in his |
---|
36 | 36 | | distinguished career, including the Man of the Year honor from the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Georgetown Chamber of Commerce in 1979 and a Lifetime Achievement |
---|
38 | 38 | | Award from the Georgetown Area Community Foundation, and he was |
---|
39 | 39 | | elected president of the Williamson County Bar Association; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Active in his community, Judge Lott was a director |
---|
41 | 41 | | of First National Bank in Georgetown, a Mason for more than 60 |
---|
42 | 42 | | years, and a member of the Georgetown Rotary and Lions Clubs; |
---|
43 | 43 | | moreover, he was a congregant at First United Methodist Church of |
---|
44 | 44 | | Georgetown, where he served as a trustee; he also served on the |
---|
45 | 45 | | regional boards of the Wesleyan Home, the United Way, the American |
---|
46 | 46 | | Cancer Society, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, and the |
---|
47 | 47 | | Georgetown Citizens' Advisory Committee; and |
---|
48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, A quintessential Southern gentleman with a wicked |
---|
49 | 49 | | sense of humor, William Lott served the residents of Williamson |
---|
50 | 50 | | County with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering devotion to |
---|
51 | 51 | | the well-being of his community and its citizens, and all those |
---|
52 | 52 | | fortunate enough to have known him will forever cherish their |
---|
53 | 53 | | memories of this esteemed Texan; now, therefore, be it |
---|
54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
55 | 55 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable William |
---|
56 | 56 | | Sunday Lott and express sincere sympathy to the members of his |
---|
57 | 57 | | family: to his children, Cathy Lott Durr and Bill Hervey Lott and |
---|
58 | 58 | | his wife, Gisela; to his grandchildren, Ryan Travis Lott and Neal |
---|
59 | 59 | | Brandon Lott; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it |
---|

61 | 61 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

62 | 62 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
63 | 63 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judge Lott. |
