44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Since its establishment in November 2008, the
66 Mother/Daughter Program at Gus Garcia Middle School in Austin has
77 helped to make a positive difference in the lives of its
88 participants; and
99 WHEREAS, Directed by sixth grade counselor Faye
1010 Thomas-Terrell, the Mother/Daughter Program aims to increase the
1111 graduation rate among the underserved female population, emphasize
1212 higher education, and increase parental involvement; and
1313 WHEREAS, Students are recommended by faculty and staff who
1414 see in them a desire to be academically successful and the potential
1515 to benefit from the extra support of a mentor, increased
1616 self-esteem, more one-on-one time with their mothers, career
1717 counseling, and support in a small group setting; and
1818 WHEREAS, A meeting is held each month for the student
1919 participants and their mothers, who learn how to motivate and
2020 encourage their daughters to pursue their goals; and
2121 WHEREAS, Supported by principal Dr. Helen Johnson, this
2222 worthwhile initiative is helping to build vital relationships while
2323 assisting young Texans on their journey toward success; now,
2424 therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2626 Legislature hereby honor the Mother/Daughter Program at Gus Garcia
2727 Middle School and extend to all those involved with the group
2828 sincere best wishes for the future.
