| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Since its establishment in November 2008, the |

| 6 | 6 | | Mother/Daughter Program at Gus Garcia Middle School in Austin has |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | helped to make a positive difference in the lives of its |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | participants; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Directed by sixth grade counselor Faye |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Thomas-Terrell, the Mother/Daughter Program aims to increase the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | graduation rate among the underserved female population, emphasize |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | higher education, and increase parental involvement; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Students are recommended by faculty and staff who |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | see in them a desire to be academically successful and the potential |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | to benefit from the extra support of a mentor, increased |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | self-esteem, more one-on-one time with their mothers, career |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | counseling, and support in a small group setting; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A meeting is held each month for the student |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | participants and their mothers, who learn how to motivate and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | encourage their daughters to pursue their goals; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Supported by principal Dr. Helen Johnson, this |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | worthwhile initiative is helping to build vital relationships while |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | assisting young Texans on their journey toward success; now, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | therefore, be it |

| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature hereby honor the Mother/Daughter Program at Gus Garcia |

| 27 | 27 | | Middle School and extend to all those involved with the group |
