H.R. No. 754 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Since its establishment in November 2008, the Mother/Daughter Program at Gus Garcia Middle School in Austin has helped to make a positive difference in the lives of its participants; and WHEREAS, Directed by sixth grade counselor Faye Thomas-Terrell, the Mother/Daughter Program aims to increase the graduation rate among the underserved female population, emphasize higher education, and increase parental involvement; and WHEREAS, Students are recommended by faculty and staff who see in them a desire to be academically successful and the potential to benefit from the extra support of a mentor, increased self-esteem, more one-on-one time with their mothers, career counseling, and support in a small group setting; and WHEREAS, A meeting is held each month for the student participants and their mothers, who learn how to motivate and encourage their daughters to pursue their goals; and WHEREAS, Supported by principal Dr. Helen Johnson, this worthwhile initiative is helping to build vital relationships while assisting young Texans on their journey toward success; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor the Mother/Daughter Program at Gus Garcia Middle School and extend to all those involved with the group sincere best wishes for the future.
