| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Horse trainer Steve Asmussen received the Eclipse |

| 6 | 6 | | Award as the Champion Trainer of 2008 at a ceremony held on January |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 26, 2009, in Miami Beach, Florida; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sponsored by the National Thoroughbred Racing |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Association, the Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Association, the Eclipse Awards are presented annually to horses |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and individuals for outstanding achievement in horse racing; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Steve Asmussen was born into racing, the son of a |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | former jockey and a trainer; he was mucking out stalls at the age of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | five and he took out his jockey's license at 16, riding for three |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | years before retiring; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Now one of the top trainers in the nation, Mr. |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Asmussen is currently responsible for 200 racehorses at stables in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New York, and Ontario, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Canada; he has been associated with such winning horses as War Echo, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Tiffany Royal, Sax Appeal, and Captain Cherokee, and he has won |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | training titles at racecourses across the country; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 2008, Mr. Asmussen's horses won 622 races, making |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | him the first trainer to win more than 600 races in a single year; he |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | has also been the trainer of Curlin, winner of the Preakness Stakes, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the Breeder's Cup Classic, and the Dubai World Cup; at the same |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Eclipse Awards ceremony where Mr. Asmussen was recognized, Curlin |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | was named Horse of the Year for the second consecutive year, as well |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | as the 2008 Champion Older Male; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, This Texas-based professional has played a |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | prominent role in making the Lone Star State a leader in the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | training of champions, and he may indeed take justifiable pride in |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | his remarkable achievements in the sport of horse racing; now, |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Steve Asmussen on his selection as |

| 36 | 36 | | the 2008 Champion Trainer at the Eclipse Awards and extend to him |

| 37 | 37 | | sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
