H.R. No. 775
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Horse trainer Steve Asmussen received the Eclipse
Award as the Champion Trainer of 2008 at a ceremony held on January
26, 2009, in Miami Beach, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the National Thoroughbred Racing
Association, the Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers
Association, the Eclipse Awards are presented annually to horses
and individuals for outstanding achievement in horse racing; and
WHEREAS, Steve Asmussen was born into racing, the son of a
former jockey and a trainer; he was mucking out stalls at the age of
five and he took out his jockey's license at 16, riding for three
years before retiring; and
WHEREAS, Now one of the top trainers in the nation, Mr.
Asmussen is currently responsible for 200 racehorses at stables in
Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New York, and Ontario,
Canada; he has been associated with such winning horses as War Echo,
Tiffany Royal, Sax Appeal, and Captain Cherokee, and he has won
training titles at racecourses across the country; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, Mr. Asmussen's horses won 622 races, making
him the first trainer to win more than 600 races in a single year; he
has also been the trainer of Curlin, winner of the Preakness Stakes,
the Breeder's Cup Classic, and the Dubai World Cup; at the same
Eclipse Awards ceremony where Mr. Asmussen was recognized, Curlin
was named Horse of the Year for the second consecutive year, as well
as the 2008 Champion Older Male; and
WHEREAS, This Texas-based professional has played a
prominent role in making the Lone Star State a leader in the
training of champions, and he may indeed take justifiable pride in
his remarkable achievements in the sport of horse racing; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Steve Asmussen on his selection as
the 2008 Champion Trainer at the Eclipse Awards and extend to him
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Asmussen as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
