44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Crockett are
66 gathering in Austin on April 15, 2009, to celebrate Crockett Day at
77 the State Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, The region where Crockett is located has played a
99 prominent role in Texas history; the town is situated on the route
1010 of El Camino Real, or the Old San Antonio Road, which was used by
1111 Spanish missionaries and other early settlers, and in 1836, Davy
1212 Crockett is thought to have camped in the area on his way to the
1313 Alamo; when the town was founded the following year, it was named in
1414 Crockett's honor and became the seat of Houston County, the first
1515 county established by the Republic of Texas; and
1616 WHEREAS, Today, visitors can explore the area's history at a
1717 number of notable sites, including the Rice Log Cabin, an original
1818 stagecoach house now located at Mission Tejas State Park, and the
1919 1909 Crockett Railroad Depot, which serves as a visitor center and
2020 museum; another historic landmark is the Monroe-Crook House, built
2121 in 1854 by a relative of President James Monroe, which reflects the
2222 elegant architectural tastes of some of the city's early citizens;
2323 this home and other vintage buildings in Crockett create a charming
2424 atmosphere and make the town a popular stop on the Texas Forest
2525 Trail driving route; and
2626 WHEREAS, Crockett and surrounding towns boast a number of
2727 other popular attractions, including the Houston County Fair,
2828 Christmas in Crockett, the Peanut Festival in Grapeland, and the
2929 Lovefest in Lovelady; moreover, the area has become a well-known
3030 center for music, with numerous performances being presented by the
3131 Dennis Ivey Texas Opry, the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association, the
3232 Lovelady Old Gym, and other venues and organizations; special
3333 events such as the World Championship Fiddler's Festival, the Texas
3434 Forest Country Western Swing Festival, and gospel and bluegrass
3535 festivals further enhance the community's musical offerings; and
3636 WHEREAS, A productive area for business and industry, Houston
3737 County is home to companies such as Vulcraft Group, the Christopher
3838 Lumber Company, Earl's Apparel, Alloy Polymers, ElastoTech
3939 SouthWest, P Chem, and the East Texas Medical Center, to name but a
4040 few of the many enterprises that help drive the local economy; and
4141 WHEREAS, County businesses benefit from the dedicated
4242 efforts of the Crockett Area Chamber of Commerce, a member-driven
4343 organization that provides valuable assistance to new and existing
4444 companies and serves as an advocate and an information resource on
4545 issues affecting local commerce; and
4646 WHEREAS, The cooperative actions of the chamber are
4747 indicative of the friendly, community-oriented outlook of
4848 Crockett's citizens, whose actions have helped build an attractive,
4949 livable, and prosperous town that is enjoyed by residents and
5050 visitors alike; now, therefore, be it
5151 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5252 Legislature hereby recognize April 15, 2009, as Crockett Day at the
5353 State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
5454 wishes for a productive and enjoyable visit to Austin.
