5	5	WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Crockett are
6	6	gathering in Austin on April 15, 2009, to celebrate Crockett Day at
7	7	the State Capitol; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The region where Crockett is located has played a
9	9	prominent role in Texas history; the town is situated on the route
10	10	of El Camino Real, or the Old San Antonio Road, which was used by
11	11	Spanish missionaries and other early settlers, and in 1836, Davy
12	12	Crockett is thought to have camped in the area on his way to the
13	13	Alamo; when the town was founded the following year, it was named in
14	14	Crockett's honor and became the seat of Houston County, the first
15	15	county established by the Republic of Texas; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Today, visitors can explore the area's history at a
17	17	number of notable sites, including the Rice Log Cabin, an original
18	18	stagecoach house now located at Mission Tejas State Park, and the
19	19	1909 Crockett Railroad Depot, which serves as a visitor center and
20	20	museum; another historic landmark is the Monroe-Crook House, built
21	21	in 1854 by a relative of President James Monroe, which reflects the
22	22	elegant architectural tastes of some of the city's early citizens;
23	23	this home and other vintage buildings in Crockett create a charming
24	24	atmosphere and make the town a popular stop on the Texas Forest
25	25	Trail driving route; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Crockett and surrounding towns boast a number of
27	27	other popular attractions, including the Houston County Fair,
28	28	Christmas in Crockett, the Peanut Festival in Grapeland, and the
29	29	Lovefest in Lovelady; moreover, the area has become a well-known
30	30	center for music, with numerous performances being presented by the
31	31	Dennis Ivey Texas Opry, the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association, the
32	32	Lovelady Old Gym, and other venues and organizations; special
33	33	events such as the World Championship Fiddler's Festival, the Texas
34	34	Forest Country Western Swing Festival, and gospel and bluegrass
35	35	festivals further enhance the community's musical offerings; and
36	36	WHEREAS, A productive area for business and industry, Houston
37	37	County is home to companies such as Vulcraft Group, the Christopher
38	38	Lumber Company, Earl's Apparel, Alloy Polymers, ElastoTech
39	39	SouthWest, P Chem, and the East Texas Medical Center, to name but a
40	40	few of the many enterprises that help drive the local economy; and
41	41	WHEREAS, County businesses benefit from the dedicated
42	42	efforts of the Crockett Area Chamber of Commerce, a member-driven
43	43	organization that provides valuable assistance to new and existing
44	44	companies and serves as an advocate and an information resource on
45	45	issues affecting local commerce; and
46	46	WHEREAS, The cooperative actions of the chamber are
47	47	indicative of the friendly, community-oriented outlook of
48	48	Crockett's citizens, whose actions have helped build an attractive,
49	49	livable, and prosperous town that is enjoyed by residents and
50	50	visitors alike; now, therefore, be it
51	51	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
52	52	Legislature hereby recognize April 15, 2009, as Crockett Day at the
53	53	State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
54	54	wishes for a productive and enjoyable visit to Austin.
