H.R. No. 837 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Crockett are gathering in Austin on April 15, 2009, to celebrate Crockett Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, The region where Crockett is located has played a prominent role in Texas history; the town is situated on the route of El Camino Real, or the Old San Antonio Road, which was used by Spanish missionaries and other early settlers, and in 1836, Davy Crockett is thought to have camped in the area on his way to the Alamo; when the town was founded the following year, it was named in Crockett's honor and became the seat of Houston County, the first county established by the Republic of Texas; and WHEREAS, Today, visitors can explore the area's history at a number of notable sites, including the Rice Log Cabin, an original stagecoach house now located at Mission Tejas State Park, and the 1909 Crockett Railroad Depot, which serves as a visitor center and museum; another historic landmark is the Monroe-Crook House, built in 1854 by a relative of President James Monroe, which reflects the elegant architectural tastes of some of the city's early citizens; this home and other vintage buildings in Crockett create a charming atmosphere and make the town a popular stop on the Texas Forest Trail driving route; and WHEREAS, Crockett and surrounding towns boast a number of other popular attractions, including the Houston County Fair, Christmas in Crockett, the Peanut Festival in Grapeland, and the Lovefest in Lovelady; moreover, the area has become a well-known center for music, with numerous performances being presented by the Dennis Ivey Texas Opry, the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association, the Lovelady Old Gym, and other venues and organizations; special events such as the World Championship Fiddler's Festival, the Texas Forest Country Western Swing Festival, and gospel and bluegrass festivals further enhance the community's musical offerings; and WHEREAS, A productive area for business and industry, Houston County is home to companies such as Vulcraft Group, the Christopher Lumber Company, Earl's Apparel, Alloy Polymers, ElastoTech SouthWest, P Chem, and the East Texas Medical Center, to name but a few of the many enterprises that help drive the local economy; and WHEREAS, County businesses benefit from the dedicated efforts of the Crockett Area Chamber of Commerce, a member-driven organization that provides valuable assistance to new and existing companies and serves as an advocate and an information resource on issues affecting local commerce; and WHEREAS, The cooperative actions of the chamber are indicative of the friendly, community-oriented outlook of Crockett's citizens, whose actions have helped build an attractive, livable, and prosperous town that is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize April 15, 2009, as Crockett Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best wishes for a productive and enjoyable visit to Austin.
