| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, After nearly two decades of distinguished service, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Jim Wyatt is retiring from the Victoria City Council in May 2009; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Victoria's first African American council member |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | and mayor pro tempore, Jim Wyatt won the District 5 seat in 1988 and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | held it until 1995; since his return to the city council in 2000, he |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | has served continuously through his current term, and he has chosen |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | not to seek reelection; having been employed as a materials manager |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | for DuPont, Mr. Wyatt brought a unique perspective and a range of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | business expertise to municipal government, and he played an |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | instrumental role in such projects as the sports complex, the skate |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | park, and Lone Tree Road; he was also particularly interested in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | providing programs and activities for at-risk youth, and he |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | encouraged them to seek peaceful means of resolving conflicts; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his participation on the city |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | council, Mr. Wyatt has served on the board of directors of the Texas |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Municipal League and as president of the Texas Association of |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Mayors and Council Members; he has also been active in numerous |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | community organizations, including the African American Chamber of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Commerce of Victoria, the Task Force Toward Community Peace, and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the Victoria World Hunger Project; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A dedicated public servant, Jim Wyatt is an |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | inspiration to his fellow citizens, and he may indeed reflect with |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | great pride on his many notable achievements; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby honor Jim Wyatt for his outstanding |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | contributions to the Victoria City Council and extend to him |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
