5	5	relating to a fee associated with the assignment of a vehicle
6	6	identification number by the Texas Department of Transportation.
7	7	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
8	8	SECTION 1. Section 501.033, Transportation Code, is amended
9	9	by adding Subsection (e) to read as follows:
10	10	(e) If the auto theft unit of a county or municipal law
11	11	enforcement agency conducts an inspection required by the
12	12	department under this section, the agency may impose a fee of $40.
13	13	The county or municipal treasurer shall credit the fee to the
14	14	general fund of the county or municipality, as applicable, to
15	15	defray the agency's cost associated with the inspection. The fee
16	16	shall be waived by the department or agency imposing the fee if the
17	17	person applying under this section is the current registered owner.
18	18	SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009.
