5	5	WHEREAS, The community of Bridgeport, Texas, started from a
6	6	toll bridge crossing of the Trinity River for stagecoaches of the
7	7	Overland Mail Company, and the name "Bridgeport" was acquired from
8	8	the bridge that portaged the stream; and
9	9	WHEREAS, There is a national legislative initiative to create
10	10	a national Overland Mail Company trail from Tipton, Missouri, to
11	11	San Francisco, California, which will pass through Bridgeport,
12	12	Texas; and
13	13	WHEREAS, The city's first economy was based on the stagecoach
14	14	and wagon shipping activity through Bridgeport; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Bridgeport has celebrated its unique Butterfield
16	16	Stage Days for many years, and there is a long tradition in
17	17	Bridgeport of using a stagecoach in at least three events annually;
18	18	and
19	19	WHEREAS, Bridgeport has its own Concord Stagecoach and keeps
20	20	it on public display; the city uses the stagecoach as a symbol and
21	21	an icon and plans events around its stagecoach heritage; and
22	22	WHEREAS, The Main Street program heritage and tourist efforts
23	23	in Bridgeport have been, and continue to be, centered around the
24	24	stagecoach theme; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Given Bridgeport's origins as a stagecoach crossing
26	26	and the continuing efforts of the city to preserve this picturesque
27	27	and symbolic part of its history, it is fitting that the historic
28	28	connection between the stagecoach and the City of Bridgeport be
29	29	duly recognized; now, therefore, be it
30	30	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
31	31	hereby designate Bridgeport as the official Stagecoach Capital of
32	32	Texas.
