5	5	WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at
6	6	the tragic death of James Michael Grant of Gatesville on September
7	7	15, 2007, at the age of 44; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Michael Grant was born in Denton to Garnett and
9	9	Nancy Grant on May 23, 1963; he graduated from Gatesville High
10	10	School in 1981 and went on to attend Southwest Texas State
11	11	University; he later became an integral part of the family
12	12	business, including operating Grant's Bar & Grill in Copperas Cove
13	13	for more than 10 years; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Possessing a natural love of learning, Mr. Grant
15	15	eagerly consumed knowledge of history and politics and delighted in
16	16	the family pastime of political debate; moreover, he was an avid
17	17	reader whose goal it was to read all of the great books; equally
18	18	comfortable with hands-on pursuits, he had a knack for building and
19	19	repairing things, and he was a gifted writer and artist; his
20	20	multifaceted interests also included star gazing at the top of
21	21	Grant's Mountain, hunting, camping, football, guns, and cars; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Mr. Grant further distinguished himself as a
23	23	dedicated and loving father who worked hard to provide a good home
24	24	for his children; with his genuine love of life and his generosity
25	25	toward others, he set an inspiring example for his daughters, Jana
26	26	and Kate, and their remarkable achievements since his passing are
27	27	due in no small part to the foundation he laid for them while he was
28	28	alive; and
29	29	WHEREAS, His oldest daughter, Jana Ramsey Grant, is a
30	30	graduating senior at Comanche High School, where she was not only
31	31	named class favorite both her junior and senior years, but she was
32	32	also selected as the 2008-2009 homecoming queen; in addition, she
33	33	has participated in such UIL events as literary criticism, prose,
34	34	poetry, and one-act play, for which she earned Honorable Mention
35	35	All-Star Cast, and she is a member of the cheerleading squad;
36	36	outside of school, she gives back to her fellow residents through
37	37	her involvement in the faith-based group Community Rehab; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Kate Grant is a straight-A student in the gifted and
39	39	talented program at Decatur Intermediate School and was an
40	40	award-winning participant in the FFA food project at the Wise
41	41	County Youth Fair; when she is not studying, she spends much of her
42	42	time practicing for the Quest Aquatics Swim Team, and she plans to
43	43	participate in track and field, cross-country, and volleyball at
44	44	Decatur Middle School next year; moreover, she has explored public
45	45	service as an honorary sergeant in the Texas House of
46	46	Representatives and as a student scholar in Senator Kip Averitt's
47	47	office; and
48	48	WHEREAS, Mr. Grant would no doubt beam with pride to see these
49	49	talented young women today; left in his stead to share in the
50	50	pleasure of their accomplishments are his father, Garnett Grant,
51	51	and his siblings, Shelton and Kathy Grant; Michael Grant was the
52	52	rock of his close-knit family, and it is only fitting that they are
53	53	in turn providing such stability, encouragement, and guidance for
54	54	his cherished daughters; and
55	55	WHEREAS, Michael Grant would have turned 46 years old on May
56	56	23, 2009, a day that will forever hold special meaning for those
57	57	closest to him; although his many friends and loved ones have
58	58	experienced tremendous grief in the wake of his death, they may take
59	59	comfort in knowing that he embraced life to the fullest and brought
60	60	immeasurable joy to countless people during his years on this
61	61	earth; now, therefore, be it
62	62	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
63	63	hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Michael Grant and extend
64	64	sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughters,
65	65	Jana Ramsey Grant and Kate Grant; to his father, Garnett Grant; to
66	66	his brother, Shelton Grant; to his sister, Kathy Grant; to his
67	67	companion, Cheri Lock Tull; and to all who mourn his passing; and,
68	68	be it further
69	69	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
70	70	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
71	71	Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
72	72	Michael Grant.
