44 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
55 WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at
66 the tragic death of James Michael Grant of Gatesville on September
77 15, 2007, at the age of 44; and
88 WHEREAS, Michael Grant was born in Denton to Garnett and
99 Nancy Grant on May 23, 1963; he graduated from Gatesville High
1010 School in 1981 and went on to attend Southwest Texas State
1111 University; he later became an integral part of the family
1212 business, including operating Grant's Bar & Grill in Copperas Cove
1313 for more than 10 years; and
1414 WHEREAS, Possessing a natural love of learning, Mr. Grant
1515 eagerly consumed knowledge of history and politics and delighted in
1616 the family pastime of political debate; moreover, he was an avid
1717 reader whose goal it was to read all of the great books; equally
1818 comfortable with hands-on pursuits, he had a knack for building and
1919 repairing things, and he was a gifted writer and artist; his
2020 multifaceted interests also included star gazing at the top of
2121 Grant's Mountain, hunting, camping, football, guns, and cars; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Grant further distinguished himself as a
2323 dedicated and loving father who worked hard to provide a good home
2424 for his children; with his genuine love of life and his generosity
2525 toward others, he set an inspiring example for his daughters, Jana
2626 and Kate, and their remarkable achievements since his passing are
2727 due in no small part to the foundation he laid for them while he was
2828 alive; and
2929 WHEREAS, His oldest daughter, Jana Ramsey Grant, is a
3030 graduating senior at Comanche High School, where she was not only
3131 named class favorite both her junior and senior years, but she was
3232 also selected as the 2008-2009 homecoming queen; in addition, she
3333 has participated in such UIL events as literary criticism, prose,
3434 poetry, and one-act play, for which she earned Honorable Mention
3535 All-Star Cast, and she is a member of the cheerleading squad;
3636 outside of school, she gives back to her fellow residents through
3737 her involvement in the faith-based group Community Rehab; and
3838 WHEREAS, Kate Grant is a straight-A student in the gifted and
3939 talented program at Decatur Intermediate School and was an
4040 award-winning participant in the FFA food project at the Wise
4141 County Youth Fair; when she is not studying, she spends much of her
4242 time practicing for the Quest Aquatics Swim Team, and she plans to
4343 participate in track and field, cross-country, and volleyball at
4444 Decatur Middle School next year; moreover, she has explored public
4545 service as an honorary sergeant in the Texas House of
4646 Representatives and as a student scholar in Senator Kip Averitt's
4747 office; and
4848 WHEREAS, Mr. Grant would no doubt beam with pride to see these
4949 talented young women today; left in his stead to share in the
5050 pleasure of their accomplishments are his father, Garnett Grant,
5151 and his siblings, Shelton and Kathy Grant; Michael Grant was the
5252 rock of his close-knit family, and it is only fitting that they are
5353 in turn providing such stability, encouragement, and guidance for
5454 his cherished daughters; and
5555 WHEREAS, Michael Grant would have turned 46 years old on May
5656 23, 2009, a day that will forever hold special meaning for those
5757 closest to him; although his many friends and loved ones have
5858 experienced tremendous grief in the wake of his death, they may take
5959 comfort in knowing that he embraced life to the fullest and brought
6060 immeasurable joy to countless people during his years on this
6161 earth; now, therefore, be it
6262 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
6363 hereby pay tribute to the memory of James Michael Grant and extend
6464 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughters,
6565 Jana Ramsey Grant and Kate Grant; to his father, Garnett Grant; to
6666 his brother, Shelton Grant; to his sister, Kathy Grant; to his
6767 companion, Cheri Lock Tull; and to all who mourn his passing; and,
6868 be it further
6969 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
7070 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
7171 Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
7272 Michael Grant.
