11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1027
22 WHEREAS, The accomplished life of Gloria Reyes Garcia of
33 Raymondville has inspired all who are privileged to know her; and
44 WHEREAS, Born on August 14, 1952, to migrant workers Jose
55 and Santos Sosa, Gloria Garcia attended Raymondville schools
66 while working alongside her family in the fields; as a young
77 adult, she took a job with a migrant worker outreach program
88 called the Last Yellow Bus, in which she drove people to and from
99 their medical appointments and delivered medications; and
1010 WHEREAS, She was soon promoted to work in the referral
1111 department of Su Clinica Familiar, a new local clinic with a
1212 focus on migrant health care, and she went on to serve in several
1313 positions, including assistant social worker and migrant
1414 hospital coordinator, before being named the clinic manager in
1515 1977; and
1616 WHEREAS, After leaving the organization and pursuing a
1717 second career in real estate, she entered public service as a
1818 member of the Raymondville Independent School District Board of
1919 Trustees; she worked hard to improve the educational experience
2020 of area children, successfully advocating for the passage of two
2121 school bonds and helping secure salary increases for both
2222 teachers and support staff; also during her tenure, she
2323 contributed important leadership as vice president and president
2424 of the board; and
2525 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has further served her fellow
2626 citizens as vice president of the Su Clinica Familiar Board of
2727 Directors and as a member of the National Advisory Council on
2828 Migrant Health; moreover, between 1999 and 2001, she copublished
2929 a weekly newspaper called the Willacy Times; in one of her
3030 well-known but less formal roles, she has assisted numerous
3131 survivors of sexual violence, especially those who have nowhere
3232 else to turn; and
3333 WHEREAS, Gloria Garcia's real estate business has
3434 flourished through the years, and she currently owns more than
3535 100 acres of land; she is supported in her endeavors by her
3636 husband, Richard, as well as her five children, Sandra, Jennifer,
3737 Stacey, Erica, and Richard; and
3838 WHEREAS, Gloria Reyes Garcia has set an outstanding
3939 example of hard work and generosity to which all may aspire, and
4040 it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this distinguished Texan;
4141 now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4343 Legislature, hereby honor Gloria Reyes Garcia for her myriad
4444 achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
4545 success and happiness; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
