2	2	WHEREAS, The accomplished life of Gloria Reyes Garcia of
3	3	Raymondville has inspired all who are privileged to know her; and
4	4	WHEREAS, Born on August 14, 1952, to migrant workers Jose
5	5	and Santos Sosa, Gloria Garcia attended Raymondville schools
6	6	while working alongside her family in the fields; as a young
7	7	adult, she took a job with a migrant worker outreach program
8	8	called the Last Yellow Bus, in which she drove people to and from
9	9	their medical appointments and delivered medications; and
10	10	WHEREAS, She was soon promoted to work in the referral
11	11	department of Su Clinica Familiar, a new local clinic with a
12	12	focus on migrant health care, and she went on to serve in several
13	13	positions, including assistant social worker and migrant
14	14	hospital coordinator, before being named the clinic manager in
15	15	1977; and
16	16	WHEREAS, After leaving the organization and pursuing a
17	17	second career in real estate, she entered public service as a
18	18	member of the Raymondville Independent School District Board of
19	19	Trustees; she worked hard to improve the educational experience
20	20	of area children, successfully advocating for the passage of two
21	21	school bonds and helping secure salary increases for both
22	22	teachers and support staff; also during her tenure, she
23	23	contributed important leadership as vice president and president
24	24	of the board; and
25	25	WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has further served her fellow
26	26	citizens as vice president of the Su Clinica Familiar Board of
27	27	Directors and as a member of the National Advisory Council on
28	28	Migrant Health; moreover, between 1999 and 2001, she copublished
29	29	a weekly newspaper called the Willacy Times; in one of her
30	30	well-known but less formal roles, she has assisted numerous
31	31	survivors of sexual violence, especially those who have nowhere
32	32	else to turn; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Gloria Garcia's real estate business has
34	34	flourished through the years, and she currently owns more than
35	35	100 acres of land; she is supported in her endeavors by her
36	36	husband, Richard, as well as her five children, Sandra, Jennifer,
37	37	Stacey, Erica, and Richard; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Gloria Reyes Garcia has set an outstanding
39	39	example of hard work and generosity to which all may aspire, and
40	40	it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this distinguished Texan;
41	41	now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
43	43	Legislature, hereby honor Gloria Reyes Garcia for her myriad
44	44	achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
45	45	success and happiness; and, be it further
46	46	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
47	47	her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
