SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1027 WHEREAS, The accomplished life of Gloria Reyes Garcia of Raymondville has inspired all who are privileged to know her; and WHEREAS, Born on August 14, 1952, to migrant workers Jose and Santos Sosa, Gloria Garcia attended Raymondville schools while working alongside her family in the fields; as a young adult, she took a job with a migrant worker outreach program called the Last Yellow Bus, in which she drove people to and from their medical appointments and delivered medications; and WHEREAS, She was soon promoted to work in the referral department of Su Clinica Familiar, a new local clinic with a focus on migrant health care, and she went on to serve in several positions, including assistant social worker and migrant hospital coordinator, before being named the clinic manager in 1977; and WHEREAS, After leaving the organization and pursuing a second career in real estate, she entered public service as a member of the Raymondville Independent School District Board of Trustees; she worked hard to improve the educational experience of area children, successfully advocating for the passage of two school bonds and helping secure salary increases for both teachers and support staff; also during her tenure, she contributed important leadership as vice president and president of the board; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has further served her fellow citizens as vice president of the Su Clinica Familiar Board of Directors and as a member of the National Advisory Council on Migrant Health; moreover, between 1999 and 2001, she copublished a weekly newspaper called the Willacy Times; in one of her well-known but less formal roles, she has assisted numerous survivors of sexual violence, especially those who have nowhere else to turn; and WHEREAS, Gloria Garcia's real estate business has flourished through the years, and she currently owns more than 100 acres of land; she is supported in her endeavors by her husband, Richard, as well as her five children, Sandra, Jennifer, Stacey, Erica, and Richard; and WHEREAS, Gloria Reyes Garcia has set an outstanding example of hard work and generosity to which all may aspire, and it is indeed a pleasure to recognize this distinguished Texan; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby honor Gloria Reyes Garcia for her myriad achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
