11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1049
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the members of the Williams-Livingston family on the
44 grand occasion of their family reunion, which is being held June
55 5 through 7, 2009; and
66 WHEREAS, Every year, on the first Saturday of June, members
77 of the Williams-Livingston family hold a reunion to celebrate
88 their heritage and to commemorate the birth of Mamie Elizabeth
99 "Mama Mae" Williams; they invite friends from across Texas and
1010 the United States and descendants of other branches of the family
1111 to share their celebration of love for their family and
1212 community; and
1313 WHEREAS, The reunion features a family talent show, an
1414 old-fashioned fish fry, and a recital of the family's history;
1515 the Mamie E. Williams Humanitarian Award is given to one family
1616 member for unselfish service to the family, and recognition is
1717 given for graduations, academic and athletic accomplishments,
1818 marriages, anniversaries, and births; family members who have
1919 died since the last reunion are recognized and remembered with a
2020 moment of silence; and
2121 WHEREAS, Each year, a new set of family members takes the
2222 helm on duties and responsibilities of preparing for and
2323 coordinating the reunion and passing on the family history; and
2424 WHEREAS, Family history reveals that the Charles and
2525 Caroline Livingston families arrived in the Freestone County
2626 area in the early 1800s; and
2727 WHEREAS, Charles Livingston's family moved from Virginia
2828 as freed slaves and settled in the Freestone County area known as
2929 Cotton Gin and sharecropped on local farms; and
3030 WHEREAS, Caroline Livingston's family moved from Alabama
3131 to Kirvin in Freestone County; they arrived in covered wagons, on
3232 horseback, and on foot; they settled on the Alfred Carter farm
3333 and worked his land; and
3434 WHEREAS, Caroline and Charles Livingston's children,
3535 Elbert Jefferson, Fannie, Foster, Elizabeth, and Callie,
3636 supported their community and were instrumental in establishing
3737 the Woods Chapel Primitive Baptist Church; they also helped
3838 create a public school system; and
3939 WHEREAS, The members of the Williams-Livingston family who
4040 host the annual reunion are the descendants of Caroline and
4141 Charles Livingston's daughter Elizabeth Livingston; born July 2,
4242 1866, she married Austin Williams, a freed slave from Tennessee,
4343 and the couple had 10 children; Mamie Elizabeth "Mama Mae"
4444 Williams, born June 1, 1889, was one of those children; and
4545 WHEREAS, Mamie Elizabeth "Mama Mae" Williams was the
4646 matriarch of the Williams-Livingston family until October 13,
4747 1987, when she died at the age of 98; her daughters and their
4848 families had scattered across Texas to Dallas, Fort Worth,
4949 Houston, and San Antonio, where many of the Williams-Livingston
5050 family members reside and work today; and
5151 WHEREAS, The Williams-Livingston family members are
5252 successful men and women who have contributed greatly to their
5353 communities through their leadership, professionalism, and
5454 concern for others; and
5555 WHEREAS, They are exemplary citizens who believe strongly
5656 in traditional values and instill in their children the virtues
5757 of love and hard work; and
5858 WHEREAS, The annual Williams-Livingston reunion is the
5959 manifestation of the family's belief in unity, loyalty, and pride
6060 in one's heritage; now, therefore, be it
6161 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
6262 Legislature, hereby extend to the members of the
6363 Williams-Livingston family best wishes for a joyous and memorable
6464 family reunion and proclaim June 6, 2009, Williams-Livingston Day in
6565 Texas; and, be it further
6666 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6767 the family as a memento of this special occasion.
