2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the members of the Williams-Livingston family on the |
---|
4 | 4 | | grand occasion of their family reunion, which is being held June |
---|
5 | 5 | | 5 through 7, 2009; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Every year, on the first Saturday of June, members |
---|
7 | 7 | | of the Williams-Livingston family hold a reunion to celebrate |
---|
8 | 8 | | their heritage and to commemorate the birth of Mamie Elizabeth |
---|
9 | 9 | | "Mama Mae" Williams; they invite friends from across Texas and |
---|
10 | 10 | | the United States and descendants of other branches of the family |
---|
11 | 11 | | to share their celebration of love for their family and |
---|
12 | 12 | | community; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The reunion features a family talent show, an |
---|
14 | 14 | | old-fashioned fish fry, and a recital of the family's history; |
---|
15 | 15 | | the Mamie E. Williams Humanitarian Award is given to one family |
---|
16 | 16 | | member for unselfish service to the family, and recognition is |
---|
17 | 17 | | given for graduations, academic and athletic accomplishments, |
---|
18 | 18 | | marriages, anniversaries, and births; family members who have |
---|
19 | 19 | | died since the last reunion are recognized and remembered with a |
---|
20 | 20 | | moment of silence; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Each year, a new set of family members takes the |
---|
22 | 22 | | helm on duties and responsibilities of preparing for and |
---|
23 | 23 | | coordinating the reunion and passing on the family history; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Family history reveals that the Charles and |
---|
25 | 25 | | Caroline Livingston families arrived in the Freestone County |
---|
26 | 26 | | area in the early 1800s; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Charles Livingston's family moved from Virginia |
---|
28 | 28 | | as freed slaves and settled in the Freestone County area known as |
---|
29 | 29 | | Cotton Gin and sharecropped on local farms; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Caroline Livingston's family moved from Alabama |
---|
31 | 31 | | to Kirvin in Freestone County; they arrived in covered wagons, on |
---|
32 | 32 | | horseback, and on foot; they settled on the Alfred Carter farm |
---|
33 | 33 | | and worked his land; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Caroline and Charles Livingston's children, |
---|
35 | 35 | | Elbert Jefferson, Fannie, Foster, Elizabeth, and Callie, |
---|
36 | 36 | | supported their community and were instrumental in establishing |
---|
37 | 37 | | the Woods Chapel Primitive Baptist Church; they also helped |
---|
38 | 38 | | create a public school system; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Williams-Livingston family who |
---|
40 | 40 | | host the annual reunion are the descendants of Caroline and |
---|
41 | 41 | | Charles Livingston's daughter Elizabeth Livingston; born July 2, |
---|
42 | 42 | | 1866, she married Austin Williams, a freed slave from Tennessee, |
---|
43 | 43 | | and the couple had 10 children; Mamie Elizabeth "Mama Mae" |
---|
44 | 44 | | Williams, born June 1, 1889, was one of those children; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Mamie Elizabeth "Mama Mae" Williams was the |
---|
46 | 46 | | matriarch of the Williams-Livingston family until October 13, |
---|
47 | 47 | | 1987, when she died at the age of 98; her daughters and their |
---|
48 | 48 | | families had scattered across Texas to Dallas, Fort Worth, |
---|
49 | 49 | | Houston, and San Antonio, where many of the Williams-Livingston |
---|
50 | 50 | | family members reside and work today; and |
---|
51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, The Williams-Livingston family members are |
---|
52 | 52 | | successful men and women who have contributed greatly to their |
---|
53 | 53 | | communities through their leadership, professionalism, and |
---|
54 | 54 | | concern for others; and |
---|
55 | 55 | | WHEREAS, They are exemplary citizens who believe strongly |
---|
56 | 56 | | in traditional values and instill in their children the virtues |
---|
57 | 57 | | of love and hard work; and |
---|
58 | 58 | | WHEREAS, The annual Williams-Livingston reunion is the |
---|
59 | 59 | | manifestation of the family's belief in unity, loyalty, and pride |
---|
60 | 60 | | in one's heritage; now, therefore, be it |
---|
61 | 61 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
62 | 62 | | Legislature, hereby extend to the members of the |
---|
63 | 63 | | Williams-Livingston family best wishes for a joyous and memorable |
---|
64 | 64 | | family reunion and proclaim June 6, 2009, Williams-Livingston Day in |
---|
65 | 65 | | Texas; and, be it further |
---|
66 | 66 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
67 | 67 | | the family as a memento of this special occasion. |
