| 3 | 3 | | recognize the 23rd annual Texas Scottish Festival and Highland |

| 4 | 4 | | Games being held in Arlington on June 5 through 7, 2009; and |

| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Renowned as the largest Scottish gathering in the |

| 6 | 6 | | nation, the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games will |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | showcase national and regional Scottish, folk, and Celtic |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | entertainers, professional athletes, and champion Highland |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | dancers; the Texas Scottish Festival has been rated by The |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Highlander magazine as the number one Scottish festival in North |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | America for entertainment and talent; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, There will be three days filled with an exciting |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | array of food, fun, and family activities that will include |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | athletic and dance competitions and performances, Scottish |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | fiddle workshops, genealogy and educational seminars, bagpiping |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | contests, and children's games; a Friday evening Calling of the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Clans ceremony will honor the Scottish clans in attendance; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, People of Scottish descent have played a vibrant |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and influential role in the development of the State of Texas; |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | more than 40 percent of Stephen F. Austin's original 300 |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | colonists were of Scottish ancestry; one of the signers of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Texas Declaration of Independence was Collin McKinney, a man of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Scottish descent after whom both Collin County and the City of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | McKinney were named; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A number of Scotsmen fought in the Battle of the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Alamo, and others were instrumental in financing the building of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Texans of Scottish ancestry take great pride in |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | sharing with others their rich history, and it is indeed |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | appropriate that the month of June 2009 be set aside to pay |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | tribute to persons of Scottish ancestry and their many |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | contributions to this state; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby welcome the people of Scottish ancestry and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | devotees of the Scottish heritage to the 23rd annual Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Arlington and proclaim |

| 37 | 37 | | the month of June 2009 as Texas Scottish History Month; and, be it |
