SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1066
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the 23rd annual Texas Scottish Festival and Highland
Games being held in Arlington on June 5 through 7, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Renowned as the largest Scottish gathering in the
nation, the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games will
showcase national and regional Scottish, folk, and Celtic
entertainers, professional athletes, and champion Highland
dancers; the Texas Scottish Festival has been rated by The
Highlander magazine as the number one Scottish festival in North
America for entertainment and talent; and
WHEREAS, There will be three days filled with an exciting
array of food, fun, and family activities that will include
athletic and dance competitions and performances, Scottish
fiddle workshops, genealogy and educational seminars, bagpiping
contests, and children's games; a Friday evening Calling of the
Clans ceremony will honor the Scottish clans in attendance; and
WHEREAS, People of Scottish descent have played a vibrant
and influential role in the development of the State of Texas;
more than 40 percent of Stephen F. Austin's original 300
colonists were of Scottish ancestry; one of the signers of the
Texas Declaration of Independence was Collin McKinney, a man of
Scottish descent after whom both Collin County and the City of
McKinney were named; and
WHEREAS, A number of Scotsmen fought in the Battle of the
Alamo, and others were instrumental in financing the building of
the State Capitol; and
WHEREAS, Texans of Scottish ancestry take great pride in
sharing with others their rich history, and it is indeed
appropriate that the month of June 2009 be set aside to pay
tribute to persons of Scottish ancestry and their many
contributions to this state; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
Legislature, hereby welcome the people of Scottish ancestry and
devotees of the Scottish heritage to the 23rd annual Texas
Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Arlington and proclaim
the month of June 2009 as Texas Scottish History Month; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of Texas Scottish History Month.
