| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Dr. Jose Julio |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Vela, who died January 18, 2009, at the age of 68; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born January 3, 1941, to Catalina de la Pena and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Mauro Vela, Dr. Julio Vela spent his early years helping his |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | parents on their dairy farm in Realitos, Texas; he graduated from |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Benavides High School and earned a degree in pharmacy from The |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | University of Texas at Austin; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, After a successful pharmacy career in Houston, he |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | studied medicine, graduating from Southwestern Medical School in |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Dallas and completing his gastroenterology residency in Temple; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, He moved to Corpus Christi and became a respected |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | member of the medical community, where he was known for his wit, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | humor, and generosity; he was dedicated to his work in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | gastroenterology and retired in 1999 due to ill health; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Julio Vela was a source of strength to others, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and throughout his life, he eagerly shared his wisdom, humor, and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | points of view with those he loved; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Julio Vela was beloved by his family and his |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | many friends, and he will long be remembered with affection and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | appreciation by all who were privileged to share in his life; |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | family of Dr. Jose Julio Vela; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | day, it do so in memory of Dr. Julio Vela. |
