                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 130
 In Memory
 of
 Jose Julio Vela
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Dr. Jose Julio
 Vela, who died January 18, 2009, at the age of 68; and
 WHEREAS, Born January 3, 1941, to Catalina de la Pena and
 Mauro Vela, Dr. Julio Vela spent his early years helping his
 parents on their dairy farm in Realitos, Texas; he graduated from
 Benavides High School and earned a degree in pharmacy from The
 University of Texas at Austin; and
 WHEREAS, After a successful pharmacy career in Houston, he
 studied medicine, graduating from Southwestern Medical School in
 Dallas and completing his gastroenterology residency in Temple;
 and
 WHEREAS, He moved to Corpus Christi and became a respected
 member of the medical community, where he was known for his wit,
 humor, and generosity; he was dedicated to his work in
 gastroenterology and retired in 1999 due to ill health; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Julio Vela was a source of strength to others,
 and throughout his life, he eagerly shared his wisdom, humor, and
 points of view with those he loved; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Julio Vela was beloved by his family and his
 many friends, and he will long be remembered with affection and
 appreciation by all who were privileged to share in his life;
 now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Dr. Jose Julio Vela; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
 day, it do so in memory of Dr. Julio Vela.
