| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Dr. Jose Sulaiman, who is receiving the 2008 Mr. Amigo |

| 4 | 4 | | Award during the Charro Days Fiesta in February; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Mr. Amigo Award is presented to a citizen of |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Mexico who has worked to improve the quality of life in the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Hispanic community and has contributed to international |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | friendship and the development of mutual understanding and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | cooperation between the United States and Mexico; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sulaiman is president of the World Boxing |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Council, and he has distinguished himself in the sports world and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the business world alike; he was inducted into the World Boxing |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2001, and he is the chief |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | executive officer for several companies; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sulaiman was cited by the United Nations in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 1988 for his record of leadership in the battle against apartheid |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and racial discrimination; the United States-Mexico Chamber of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Commerce and the Organization of American States conferred on him |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | its 1998 Good Neighbor Award; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sulaiman has worked hard to implement safety |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and medical rules to make boxing a more humane sport, and his |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | ongoing efforts to improve international relations have |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | contributed greatly to the spirit of community and cooperation |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | across the world; he is truly deserving of recognition for his |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | commend Dr. Jose Sulaiman for his many achievements and extend to |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | him congratulations on his selection as the 2008 Mr. Amigo |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | honoree; and, be it further |

| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
