SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 132 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Jose Sulaiman, who is receiving the 2008 Mr. Amigo Award during the Charro Days Fiesta in February; and WHEREAS, The Mr. Amigo Award is presented to a citizen of Mexico who has worked to improve the quality of life in the Hispanic community and has contributed to international friendship and the development of mutual understanding and cooperation between the United States and Mexico; and WHEREAS, Dr. Sulaiman is president of the World Boxing Council, and he has distinguished himself in the sports world and the business world alike; he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2001, and he is the chief executive officer for several companies; and WHEREAS, Dr. Sulaiman was cited by the United Nations in 1988 for his record of leadership in the battle against apartheid and racial discrimination; the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce and the Organization of American States conferred on him its 1998 Good Neighbor Award; and WHEREAS, Dr. Sulaiman has worked hard to implement safety and medical rules to make boxing a more humane sport, and his ongoing efforts to improve international relations have contributed greatly to the spirit of community and cooperation across the world; he is truly deserving of recognition for his many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby commend Dr. Jose Sulaiman for his many achievements and extend to him congratulations on his selection as the 2008 Mr. Amigo honoree; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
