44 McHenry Taylor Tichenor, Sr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of McHenry Taylor "Mac" Tichenor, Sr., who
77 died on January 3, 2009, at the age of 76; and
88 WHEREAS, Mac Tichenor was one of the foremost developers of
99 the Hispanic radio industry in the United States; he was born in
1010 Boulder, Colorado, and grew up in Harlingen; he attended
1111 Washington and Lee University and earned a bachelor's degree from
1212 The University of Texas at Austin; and
1313 WHEREAS, After serving two years with the United States
1414 Navy during the Korean Conflict, he attended The University of
1515 Texas School of Law and earned his degree in 1956; he returned to
1616 the Rio Grande Valley to work in the family broadcasting
1717 business, Tichenor Media System, that was started by his father;
1818 he worked in sales and management and became president of the
1919 company in 1967 at the age of 35; and
2020 WHEREAS, He oversaw the company's expansion in both English
2121 and Spanish language media until he stepped down in 1982 to
2222 become vice chairman of the board and focus on strategy; Tichenor
2323 Media System merged with Heftel Broadcasting in 1997 and became
2424 the nation's largest Hispanic radio group with 38 radio stations
2525 in every major Hispanic market in the United States; the company
2626 merged with Univision Communications in 2004; and
2727 WHEREAS, In 2006 the Tichenor family was named among the
2828 Giants in Broadcasting by the Library of American Broadcasting
2929 Foundation, and Mac received the prestigious Broadcaster's
3030 Foundation of America Pioneer Award at the National Association
3131 of Broadcasters Convention; and
3232 WHEREAS, After stepping down from his position as
3333 president, Mac pursued his many hobbies with his dear friend,
3434 Priscilla Flores, while living in Jensen Beach, Florida, and
3535 Hilton Head, South Carolina; and
3636 WHEREAS, Throughout his life, he had a strong faith and
3737 engaged in quiet philanthropy; he leaves behind memories that
3838 will be treasured for years to come by his family and many
3939 friends; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4141 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4242 family of McHenry Taylor Tichenor, Sr.: his children, McHenry T.
4343 Tichenor, Jr., Warren White Tichenor, Jean Tullis Tichenor,
4444 William Edward Tichenor, and David Tucker Tichenor; and his
4545 several grandchildren; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4848 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4949 memory of McHenry Taylor Tichenor, Sr.
