5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of McHenry Taylor "Mac" Tichenor, Sr., who |
---|
7 | 7 | | died on January 3, 2009, at the age of 76; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mac Tichenor was one of the foremost developers of |
---|
9 | 9 | | the Hispanic radio industry in the United States; he was born in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Boulder, Colorado, and grew up in Harlingen; he attended |
---|
11 | 11 | | Washington and Lee University and earned a bachelor's degree from |
---|
12 | 12 | | The University of Texas at Austin; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, After serving two years with the United States |
---|
14 | 14 | | Navy during the Korean Conflict, he attended The University of |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texas School of Law and earned his degree in 1956; he returned to |
---|
16 | 16 | | the Rio Grande Valley to work in the family broadcasting |
---|
17 | 17 | | business, Tichenor Media System, that was started by his father; |
---|
18 | 18 | | he worked in sales and management and became president of the |
---|
19 | 19 | | company in 1967 at the age of 35; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, He oversaw the company's expansion in both English |
---|
21 | 21 | | and Spanish language media until he stepped down in 1982 to |
---|
22 | 22 | | become vice chairman of the board and focus on strategy; Tichenor |
---|
23 | 23 | | Media System merged with Heftel Broadcasting in 1997 and became |
---|
24 | 24 | | the nation's largest Hispanic radio group with 38 radio stations |
---|
25 | 25 | | in every major Hispanic market in the United States; the company |
---|
26 | 26 | | merged with Univision Communications in 2004; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, In 2006 the Tichenor family was named among the |
---|
28 | 28 | | Giants in Broadcasting by the Library of American Broadcasting |
---|
29 | 29 | | Foundation, and Mac received the prestigious Broadcaster's |
---|
30 | 30 | | Foundation of America Pioneer Award at the National Association |
---|
31 | 31 | | of Broadcasters Convention; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, After stepping down from his position as |
---|
33 | 33 | | president, Mac pursued his many hobbies with his dear friend, |
---|
34 | 34 | | Priscilla Flores, while living in Jensen Beach, Florida, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | Hilton Head, South Carolina; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his life, he had a strong faith and |
---|
37 | 37 | | engaged in quiet philanthropy; he leaves behind memories that |
---|
38 | 38 | | will be treasured for years to come by his family and many |
---|
39 | 39 | | friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
42 | 42 | | family of McHenry Taylor Tichenor, Sr.: his children, McHenry T. |
---|
43 | 43 | | Tichenor, Jr., Warren White Tichenor, Jean Tullis Tichenor, |
---|
44 | 44 | | William Edward Tichenor, and David Tucker Tichenor; and his |
---|
45 | 45 | | several grandchildren; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

47 | 47 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |

48 | 48 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
