                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 194
 In Memory
 of
 McHenry Taylor Tichenor, Sr.
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
 commemorates the life of McHenry Taylor "Mac" Tichenor, Sr., who
 died on January 3, 2009, at the age of 76; and
 WHEREAS, Mac Tichenor was one of the foremost developers of
 the Hispanic radio industry in the United States; he was born in
 Boulder, Colorado, and grew up in Harlingen; he attended
 Washington and Lee University and earned a bachelor's degree from
 The University of Texas at Austin; and
 WHEREAS, After serving two years with the United States
 Navy during the Korean Conflict, he attended The University of
 Texas School of Law and earned his degree in 1956; he returned to
 the Rio Grande Valley to work in the family broadcasting
 business, Tichenor Media System, that was started by his father;
 he worked in sales and management and became president of the
 company in 1967 at the age of 35; and
 WHEREAS, He oversaw the company's expansion in both English
 and Spanish language media until he stepped down in 1982 to
 become vice chairman of the board and focus on strategy; Tichenor
 Media System merged with Heftel Broadcasting in 1997 and became
 the nation's largest Hispanic radio group with 38 radio stations
 in every major Hispanic market in the United States; the company
 merged with Univision Communications in 2004; and
 WHEREAS, In 2006 the Tichenor family was named among the
 Giants in Broadcasting by the Library of American Broadcasting
 Foundation, and Mac received the prestigious Broadcaster's
 Foundation of America Pioneer Award at the National Association
 of Broadcasters Convention; and
 WHEREAS, After stepping down from his position as
 president, Mac pursued his many hobbies with his dear friend,
 Priscilla Flores, while living in Jensen Beach, Florida, and
 Hilton Head, South Carolina; and
 WHEREAS, Throughout his life, he had a strong faith and
 engaged in quiet philanthropy; he leaves behind memories that
 will be treasured for years to come by his family and many
 friends; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of McHenry Taylor Tichenor, Sr.: his children, McHenry T.
 Tichenor, Jr., Warren White Tichenor, Jean Tullis Tichenor,
 William Edward Tichenor, and David Tucker Tichenor; and his
 several grandchildren; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of McHenry Taylor Tichenor, Sr.
