1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 215
2	2	WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize February
3	3	17, 2009, as Viva San Antonio Day at the State Capitol and welcome
4	4	the visiting delegation from the Alamo City; and
5	5	WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
6	6	1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came
7	7	upon a river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony,
8	8	whose feast day was being celebrated; and
9	9	WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
10	10	Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which
11	11	would become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo,
12	12	the site where 189 brave individuals held the mission for 13 days
13	13	against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; and
14	14	WHEREAS, The cry "Remember the Alamo" became the rallying
15	15	point of the Texas Revolution; today, the Alamo is a shrine and
16	16	museum and is widely recognized as the cradle of Texas liberty;
17	17	and
18	18	WHEREAS, San Antonio became formally incorporated in 1837,
19	19	when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter;
20	20	the city has since retained its sense of history and tradition
21	21	while carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it has served
22	22	and continues to serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where
23	23	the rich sounds and flavors of Native Americans, Old Mexico,
24	24	Germans, the Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep South
25	25	mingle and merge; and
26	26	WHEREAS, The city has a proud military heritage; great
27	27	military figures like Pershing, Stillwell, Krueger, LeMay,
28	28	Chennault, and Eisenhower served at San Antonio military
29	29	institutions, including Fort Sam Houston, the headquarters for
30	30	the Fifth United States Army and the home of the United States
31	31	Army Medical Command and the Brooke Army Medical Center; in
32	32	addition, San Antonio is the site of Lackland Air Force Base, the
33	33	largest training wing in the United States Air Force, and Brooks
34	34	City-Base, an innovative master-planned research and technology
35	35	center; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
37	37	development to San Antonio as its skilled workforce, excellent
38	38	institutions of public and higher education, and quality of life
39	39	have attracted some important corporate business and industry to
40	40	the city; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Millions of visitors a year delight in the
42	42	discovery of San Antonio; in addition to the Alamo, highlights
43	43	include La Villita, San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio Missions
44	44	Trail, and the famed Paseo del Rio, better known as "The
45	45	Riverwalk"; among the other attractions that make San Antonio one
46	46	of the top tourist destinations in the country are Sea World San
47	47	Antonio and the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park as well as the
48	48	PGA Tour Valero Texas Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the four-time
49	49	world champion San Antonio Spurs; and
50	50	WHEREAS, In April 2009, the city will once again celebrate
51	51	Fiesta San Antonio, the biggest 10-day party in the state; first
52	52	held 118 years ago, the event was founded by a group of ladies who
53	53	decorated horse-drawn carriages for a parade in front of the
54	54	Alamo and battled with flower blossoms instead of bullets to
55	55	honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto; and
56	56	WHEREAS, San Antonio is truly one of the treasures of the
57	57	Lone Star State, and Viva San Antonio Day provides a welcome
58	58	opportunity to honor the city and its many fine residents; now,
59	59	therefore, be it
60	60	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
61	61	Legislature, hereby recognize February 17, 2009, as Viva San
62	62	Antonio Day at the State Capitol and extend to the members of the
63	63	visiting delegation best wishes for a memorable visit.
