5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Texas A&M University Associate |
---|
7 | 7 | | Professor Douglas Alan Brooks, who died January 27, 2009, at the |
---|
8 | 8 | | age of 52; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brooks was a noted scholar and a beloved and |
---|
10 | 10 | | inspiring mentor to many students; he had a love of languages, |
---|
11 | 11 | | and he had spent years teaching English overseas early in his |
---|
12 | 12 | | career and had taken the opportunity to learn Arabic and Urdu; |
---|
13 | 13 | | and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, He earned a master's degree in linguistics at the |
---|
15 | 15 | | University of Michigan and later attended Columbia University |
---|
16 | 16 | | and earned a doctorate in English; his concentration was in early |
---|
17 | 17 | | modern literature, and he became a member of the English faculty |
---|
18 | 18 | | at Texas A&M University in College Station in 1997; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, He was noted for his passion for Shakespeare and |
---|
20 | 20 | | was among the leading American scholars on the playwright; in his |
---|
21 | 21 | | published dissertation, From Playhouse to Printing House, he |
---|
22 | 22 | | traced the evolution of the printing of Shakespeare's plays; a |
---|
23 | 23 | | widely published author and editor of the Shakespeare Yearbook |
---|
24 | 24 | | and other publications, he served as faculty advisor for the |
---|
25 | 25 | | Texas A&M Shakespeare Festival for 11 years; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brooks coordinated the Liberal Arts Honors |
---|
27 | 27 | | Program for several years and was recognized with two university |
---|
28 | 28 | | teaching awards; he was a popular and engaging teacher who was |
---|
29 | 29 | | respected and admired by his students and colleagues alike, and |
---|
30 | 30 | | he will long be remembered for his wise and generous counsel, his |
---|
31 | 31 | | sense of humor, his brilliant scholarship, and his passion for |
---|
32 | 32 | | teaching; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
35 | 35 | | family of Douglas Alan Brooks; and, be it further |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
37 | 37 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
38 | 38 | | Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
