                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 216
 In Memory
 of
 Douglas Alan Brooks
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
 commemorates the life of Texas A&M University Associate
 Professor Douglas Alan Brooks, who died January 27, 2009, at the
 age of 52; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Brooks was a noted scholar and a beloved and
 inspiring mentor to many students; he had a love of languages,
 and he had spent years teaching English overseas early in his
 career and had taken the opportunity to learn Arabic and Urdu;
 and
 WHEREAS, He earned a master's degree in linguistics at the
 University of Michigan and later attended Columbia University
 and earned a doctorate in English; his concentration was in early
 modern literature, and he became a member of the English faculty
 at Texas A&M University in College Station in 1997; and
 WHEREAS, He was noted for his passion for Shakespeare and
 was among the leading American scholars on the playwright; in his
 published dissertation, From Playhouse to Printing House, he
 traced the evolution of the printing of Shakespeare's plays; a
 widely published author and editor of the Shakespeare Yearbook
 and other publications, he served as faculty advisor for the
 Texas A&M Shakespeare Festival for 11 years; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Brooks coordinated the Liberal Arts Honors
 Program for several years and was recognized with two university
 teaching awards; he was a popular and engaging teacher who was
 respected and admired by his students and colleagues alike, and
 he will long be remembered for his wise and generous counsel, his
 sense of humor, his brilliant scholarship, and his passion for
 teaching; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Douglas Alan Brooks; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Douglas Alan Brooks.
