SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 254
WHEREAS, The Student Government Association and the Alumni
Association of Stephen F. Austin State University are visiting
the State Capitol on February 18, 2009, and this noteworthy
occasion provides a fitting opportunity to honor these
commendable organizations and commemorate the 85th anniversary
of Stephen F. Austin State University; and
WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University welcomed its
first class of students on September 18, 1923--the birthday of
its first president, Dr. Alton W. Birdwell--and since that day
has proudly produced more than 100,000 graduates through its six
academic college divisions; and
WHEREAS, Stephen F. Austin State University, with
approximately 12,000 students, offers the breadth of a state
university education with the personal attention of a private
university through more than 80 undergraduate majors, 120 areas
of study, nearly 60 graduate degrees, and two doctoral programs;
and
WHEREAS, Serving as the voice of the student body, the
Student Government Association is an effective conduit through
which students express concerns and make suggestions to
university administration; it also regularly passes legislation
to improve the quality of student life at the university; and
WHEREAS, The Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni
Association serves as the voice for more than 100,000 graduates
and is dedicated to serving the alumni, friends, and current
students of the university through programs, scholarships, and
activities that create an attitude of continued loyalty and
support; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
Legislature, hereby recognize February 18, 2009, as Stephen F.
Austin State University, SFA Student Government Association, and
SFA Alumni Association Day and extend to the organizations'
members sincere best wishes for success and happiness in their
future endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for Stephen F. Austin State University and the Student
Government Association and the Alumni Association of Stephen F.
Austin State University as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
