2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in |
---|
3 | 3 | | recognizing March 17, 2009, as Gonzales Day at the State Capitol; |
---|
4 | 4 | | and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located at the confluence of the Guadalupe and San |
---|
6 | 6 | | Marcos Rivers, Gonzales is the county seat of Gonzales County; |
---|
7 | 7 | | the city has its roots in an early settlement which was surveyed |
---|
8 | 8 | | in 1825 and abandoned the next year; it was rebuilt on the |
---|
9 | 9 | | Guadalupe River and later was the site of the first skirmish of |
---|
10 | 10 | | the Texas Revolution, which took place in October of 1835; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, A post office opened in Gonzales in 1839, and in |
---|
12 | 12 | | 1851, Gonzales College was established; when Gonzales was |
---|
13 | 13 | | incorporated in 1880, the town was the site of six churches, four |
---|
14 | 14 | | schools, a courthouse, two banks, a 500-seat opera house, and a |
---|
15 | 15 | | library; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1949, the community held the first Fryer |
---|
17 | 17 | | Frolic, a countywide celebration of the development of the |
---|
18 | 18 | | poultry industry, one of the mainstays of the county's economy; |
---|
19 | 19 | | other activities that have become traditional in the community |
---|
20 | 20 | | include the annual Come-and-Take-It Days, an event held in |
---|
21 | 21 | | commemoration of the revolutionary skirmish known as the Battle |
---|
22 | 22 | | of Gonzales; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors today can enjoy the |
---|
24 | 24 | | Gonzales Memorial Museum, which houses the town's historic |
---|
25 | 25 | | cannon and the Eggleston House, a restored dog-trot cabin; the |
---|
26 | 26 | | old 1887 jailhouse has also been preserved; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The Gonzales Economic Development Corporation |
---|
28 | 28 | | encourages area citizens to educate themselves about the history |
---|
29 | 29 | | and government of our state and is a sponsor of Gonzales Day at |
---|
30 | 30 | | the State Capitol; as part of the activities planned for the day, |
---|
31 | 31 | | the students in the Gonzales Elementary School choir have |
---|
32 | 32 | | volunteered to perform in the Capitol Rotunda; now, therefore, be |
---|
33 | 33 | | it |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Gonzales on the |
---|
36 | 36 | | amenities their city has to offer today and extend to all best |
---|
37 | 37 | | wishes for an enjoyable Gonzales Day at the State Capitol; and, |
---|

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
