SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 348 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in recognizing March 17, 2009, as Gonzales Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Located at the confluence of the Guadalupe and San Marcos Rivers, Gonzales is the county seat of Gonzales County; the city has its roots in an early settlement which was surveyed in 1825 and abandoned the next year; it was rebuilt on the Guadalupe River and later was the site of the first skirmish of the Texas Revolution, which took place in October of 1835; and WHEREAS, A post office opened in Gonzales in 1839, and in 1851, Gonzales College was established; when Gonzales was incorporated in 1880, the town was the site of six churches, four schools, a courthouse, two banks, a 500-seat opera house, and a library; and WHEREAS, In 1949, the community held the first Fryer Frolic, a countywide celebration of the development of the poultry industry, one of the mainstays of the county's economy; other activities that have become traditional in the community include the annual Come-and-Take-It Days, an event held in commemoration of the revolutionary skirmish known as the Battle of Gonzales; and WHEREAS, Residents and visitors today can enjoy the Gonzales Memorial Museum, which houses the town's historic cannon and the Eggleston House, a restored dog-trot cabin; the old 1887 jailhouse has also been preserved; and WHEREAS, The Gonzales Economic Development Corporation encourages area citizens to educate themselves about the history and government of our state and is a sponsor of Gonzales Day at the State Capitol; as part of the activities planned for the day, the students in the Gonzales Elementary School choir have volunteered to perform in the Capitol Rotunda; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Gonzales on the amenities their city has to offer today and extend to all best wishes for an enjoyable Gonzales Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
