| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Monsignor Arturo J. Bauelas, the recipient of the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Adelante Con Ganas Award for January of 2009; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Monsignor Bauelas is a native priest of the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Diocese of El Paso, Texas; he was ordained June 11, 1976, and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | today is pastor of Saint Pius X Catholic Parish in El Paso; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Monsignor Bauelas earned a master of divinity |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | degree from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana, and a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | licentiate's degree and a doctorate from Gregorian University in |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Rome; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In 1988 he founded Tepeyac Institute, a diocesan |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | ministry formation center in El Paso; today, it is one of the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | largest such centers in the nation, having trained more than |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | 12,000 persons, and it boasts a staff of more than 125 professors |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with doctorates or master's degrees teaching in advanced degree |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | programs; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Monsignor Bauelas has served on numerous |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | community boards and commissions, including the Hospice of El |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Paso; Paso del Norte Health Foundation; Las Americas Center, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | which provides legal assistance for migrants and refugees; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Festival Guadalupano Hispano; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Monsignor Bauelas in 1989 founded the Academy of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States; he is a |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | widely regarded lecturer who has presented at universities |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | across the country, and he is a published author on theology; his |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | credits include being an editorial board member for the Journal |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | of Hispanic/Latino Theology since 1993; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Monsignor Bauelas oversees Saint Pius X's 43 |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | vibrant ministries whose volunteers daily serve El Paso County, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and he is an enduring champion for migrants, farm workers, and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the county's poor and disenfranchised; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby commend Monsignor Arturo J. Bauelas for his |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | many contributions to the City of El Paso and extend to him |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | congratulations on receiving the Adelante Con Ganas Award; and, |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | be it further |

| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
