55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin and Pflugerville in mourning the loss of
77 Gerald Joseph Miller, who died February 21, 2009, at the age of
88 65; and
99 WHEREAS, Born January 9, 1944, in New Haven, Connecticut,
1010 Jerry Miller grew up in East Haven and joined the United States
1111 Navy at the age of 18; he graduated from the University of
1212 Connecticut in 1969 and moved to Austin to attend The University
1313 of Texas; he became an avid follower of the sports programs of
1414 both universities; and
1515 WHEREAS, Jerry had a successful career as a schoolteacher
1616 at Dobie Middle School, where he taught speech, drama, multimedia
1717 studies, and English for 19 years and also served as an assistant
1818 volleyball coach; a naturally gifted teacher, he was known for
1919 his popular classes and for his creativity, his sense of humor,
2020 and his sincere interest in his students; and
2121 WHEREAS, Following his retirement from teaching, he was
2222 active in the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance; his efforts on behalf
2323 of the organization included giving presentations and
2424 encouraging the public to consider organ donation; his own
2525 experience as a transplant recipient lent particular emphasis to
2626 his advocacy; and
2727 WHEREAS, Jerry was noted for his engaging personality and
2828 his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; he was a man of
2929 integrity and generosity who gave selflessly of his time and
3030 energy; and
3131 WHEREAS, He was a source of strength to others and was
3232 beloved by his family and friends, and he leaves behind memories
3333 that will be deeply treasured by all who were privileged to share
3434 in his life; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
3636 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3737 family of Gerald Joseph Miller: his mother, Mary Miller; his
3838 daughter and son-in-law, Bethany Miller Metzger and Billy; his
3939 son and daughter-in-law, Sean Miller and Jennifer; and his
4040 sisters, Nancy Leary and Maureen Dilk; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4242 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4343 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4444 memory of Jerry Miller.
