5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |

6 | 6 | | citizens of Austin and Pflugerville in mourning the loss of |

7 | 7 | | Gerald Joseph Miller, who died February 21, 2009, at the age of |

9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born January 9, 1944, in New Haven, Connecticut, |
---|
10 | 10 | | Jerry Miller grew up in East Haven and joined the United States |
---|
11 | 11 | | Navy at the age of 18; he graduated from the University of |
---|
12 | 12 | | Connecticut in 1969 and moved to Austin to attend The University |
---|
13 | 13 | | of Texas; he became an avid follower of the sports programs of |
---|
14 | 14 | | both universities; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Jerry had a successful career as a schoolteacher |
---|
16 | 16 | | at Dobie Middle School, where he taught speech, drama, multimedia |
---|
17 | 17 | | studies, and English for 19 years and also served as an assistant |
---|
18 | 18 | | volleyball coach; a naturally gifted teacher, he was known for |
---|
19 | 19 | | his popular classes and for his creativity, his sense of humor, |
---|
20 | 20 | | and his sincere interest in his students; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Following his retirement from teaching, he was |
---|
22 | 22 | | active in the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance; his efforts on behalf |
---|
23 | 23 | | of the organization included giving presentations and |
---|
24 | 24 | | encouraging the public to consider organ donation; his own |
---|
25 | 25 | | experience as a transplant recipient lent particular emphasis to |
---|
26 | 26 | | his advocacy; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Jerry was noted for his engaging personality and |
---|
28 | 28 | | his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; he was a man of |
---|
29 | 29 | | integrity and generosity who gave selflessly of his time and |
---|
30 | 30 | | energy; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, He was a source of strength to others and was |
---|
32 | 32 | | beloved by his family and friends, and he leaves behind memories |
---|
33 | 33 | | that will be deeply treasured by all who were privileged to share |
---|
34 | 34 | | in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
37 | 37 | | family of Gerald Joseph Miller: his mother, Mary Miller; his |
---|
38 | 38 | | daughter and son-in-law, Bethany Miller Metzger and Billy; his |

39 | 39 | | son and daughter-in-law, Sean Miller and Jennifer; and his |

40 | 40 | | sisters, Nancy Leary and Maureen Dilk; and, be it further |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
