                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 420
 In Memory
 of
 Gerald Joseph Miller
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of Austin and Pflugerville in mourning the loss of
 Gerald Joseph Miller, who died February 21, 2009, at the age of
 65; and
 WHEREAS, Born January 9, 1944, in New Haven, Connecticut,
 Jerry Miller grew up in East Haven and joined the United States
 Navy at the age of 18; he graduated from the University of
 Connecticut in 1969 and moved to Austin to attend The University
 of Texas; he became an avid follower of the sports programs of
 both universities; and
 WHEREAS, Jerry had a successful career as a schoolteacher
 at Dobie Middle School, where he taught speech, drama, multimedia
 studies, and English for 19 years and also served as an assistant
 volleyball coach; a naturally gifted teacher, he was known for
 his popular classes and for his creativity, his sense of humor,
 and his sincere interest in his students; and
 WHEREAS, Following his retirement from teaching, he was
 active in the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance; his efforts on behalf
 of the organization included giving presentations and
 encouraging the public to consider organ donation; his own
 experience as a transplant recipient lent particular emphasis to
 his advocacy; and
 WHEREAS, Jerry was noted for his engaging personality and
 his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; he was a man of
 integrity and generosity who gave selflessly of his time and
 energy; and
 WHEREAS, He was a source of strength to others and was
 beloved by his family and friends, and he leaves behind memories
 that will be deeply treasured by all who were privileged to share
 in his life; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Gerald Joseph Miller: his mother, Mary Miller; his
 daughter and son-in-law, Bethany Miller Metzger and Billy; his
 son and daughter-in-law, Sean Miller and Jennifer; and his
 sisters, Nancy Leary and Maureen Dilk; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Jerry Miller.
