55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Sergeant Malcolm
77 Kenneth Wilson of the Austin Police Department, who died March 6,
88 2009, at the age of 55; and
99 WHEREAS, Malcolm Kenneth "Kenny" Wilson was born in
1010 Merced, California, on December 5, 1953; he moved to Austin with
1111 his family in 1965 and graduated from Reagan High School; he
1212 attended Austin Community College and worked as a police officer
1313 for The University of Texas before joining the Austin Police
1414 Department in 1980; and
1515 WHEREAS, He was a highly respected leader in the Austin
1616 Police Department and in the community; he had been the sergeant
1717 of the Bomb Squad since 2001 and a member of the Special Weapons
1818 and Tactics team from 1988 through 1996; and
1919 WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, Kenny Wilson
2020 received 10 departmental decorations, including two Lifesaving
2121 Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal,
2222 and the Distinguished Command Medal, one of the highest medals
2323 issued to a police officer; he was selected Officer of the Year by
2424 his peers; and
2525 WHEREAS, He was also recognized by the 100 Club of Austin
2626 on two occasions; one award was for saving a young girl's life,
2727 and the second was a team award for his work with the Bomb Squad
2828 in successfully dismantling an explosive device and preserving
2929 evidence that led to the arrest and conviction of the person
3030 responsible; and
3131 WHEREAS, A man of honor and integrity, Kenny demonstrated
3232 exceptional strength and courage throughout his career and
3333 particularly over the last years as he endured the physical
3434 challenges of his illness; his passion for life and his positive
3535 attitude were truly inspirational to all who knew him; he will be
3636 deeply missed; and
3737 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and son, and he
3838 leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his
3939 family and his many friends; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4141 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4242 family of Malcolm Kenneth Wilson: his wife of 27 years, Tracy;
4343 his sons, Randy and Daniel; his mother, Billie Wilson; and his
4444 sisters, Pam Wilson, Vicki Fughtt, and Patty Hicks; and, be it
4545 further
4646 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4747 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4848 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4949 memory of Sergeant Kenny Wilson.
