1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 465
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize April 29, 2009, as The University of Texas Health
4	4	Science Center San Antonio Day; and
5	5	WHEREAS, On April 29, the center is celebrating the 50th
6	6	anniversary of the 1959 signing of legislation that established
7	7	the South Texas Medical School; the school opened its doors for
8	8	classes in 1968, and in 1972, it became one of four Health Science
9	9	Centers created by The University of Texas System Board of
10	10	Regents; and
11	11	WHEREAS, The University of Texas Health Science Center at
12	12	San Antonio is the leading research institution in South Texas
13	13	and one of the major health science universities in the world;
14	14	the center has an operating budget of $668 million and has
15	15	expanded to six campuses, which are located in San Antonio,
16	16	Laredo, Harlingen, and Edinburg; and
17	17	WHEREAS, The center employs 5,000 Texans and has had a
18	18	positive impact on the economy of South Texas since its
19	19	inception; members of its faculty are international leaders in
20	20	such fields as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney
21	21	disease, orthopaedics, transplant surgery, psychiatry, and
22	22	genetics; and
23	23	WHEREAS, The Health Science Center's innovations include
24	24	the Palmaz Stent, the first stent used with angioplasty to keep
25	25	open coronary arteries; the Titanium Rib, a lung-sparing,
26	26	expandable prosthetic device; and the EZ-IO, a way to infuse
27	27	medications into bone marrow when it is difficult to establish
28	28	traditional intravenous lines; now, therefore, be it
29	29	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
30	30	Legislature, hereby commend The University of Texas Health
31	31	Science Center at San Antonio on its invaluable contributions to
32	32	our state and its citizens and join all associated with the
33	33	center in recognizing April 29 as The University of Texas Health
34	34	Science Center San Antonio Day; and, be it further
35	35	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
36	36	honor of this occasion.
