SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 465 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize April 29, 2009, as The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Day; and WHEREAS, On April 29, the center is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1959 signing of legislation that established the South Texas Medical School; the school opened its doors for classes in 1968, and in 1972, it became one of four Health Science Centers created by The University of Texas System Board of Regents; and WHEREAS, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is the leading research institution in South Texas and one of the major health science universities in the world; the center has an operating budget of $668 million and has expanded to six campuses, which are located in San Antonio, Laredo, Harlingen, and Edinburg; and WHEREAS, The center employs 5,000 Texans and has had a positive impact on the economy of South Texas since its inception; members of its faculty are international leaders in such fields as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, orthopaedics, transplant surgery, psychiatry, and genetics; and WHEREAS, The Health Science Center's innovations include the Palmaz Stent, the first stent used with angioplasty to keep open coronary arteries; the Titanium Rib, a lung-sparing, expandable prosthetic device; and the EZ-IO, a way to infuse medications into bone marrow when it is difficult to establish traditional intravenous lines; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio on its invaluable contributions to our state and its citizens and join all associated with the center in recognizing April 29 as The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Day; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this occasion.
