| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the City of Prairie View on the grand occasion of its |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | 40th birthday on April 14, 2009; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Prairie View citizens are hosting a 40th birthday |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | celebration the first weekend of May; the celebration will |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | include food, entertainment, and a parade of businesses; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The history of the City of Prairie View is linked |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | to the history of Prairie View A&M University, which was |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | established in 1876; it was not until the 1960s, during the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | administration of Dr. A. I. Thomas, the university's president, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | that a committee was formed to begin the process of incorporating |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the area adjacent to the university into the City of Prairie |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | View; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In February of 1969, the articles of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | incorporation were approved for the city of 5,000 citizens, and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | The Prairie View City News, a bimonthly newspaper, was |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | established that spring; at the time of its founding, the city |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | was dependent on the university for fire protection, ambulance |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | service, and medical services; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1970, Prairie View consisted of the Waller |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Independent School District junior high school, five churches, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | two gas stations, a bus station, a beauty parlor, a barbershop, a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | grocery store, and a cafeteria; Eristus Sams, a farmer, was |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | elected mayor of the city; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Today, Prairie View's Economic Development |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Corporation promotes the area as a choice business location for |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | national and international firms and helps companies that are |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | relocating to the region to find the site best suited to their |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | needs; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate the citizens of Prairie View on |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | their city's rich history and on the quality of life it now |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | affords area residents and express best wishes to all on the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | occasion of Prairie View's 40th birthday; and, be it further |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | honor of the City of Prairie View. |
