                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 600
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize the City of Prairie View on the grand occasion of its
 40th birthday on April 14, 2009; and
 WHEREAS, Prairie View citizens are hosting a 40th birthday
 celebration the first weekend of May; the celebration will
 include food, entertainment, and a parade of businesses; and
 WHEREAS, The history of the City of Prairie View is linked
 to the history of Prairie View A&M University, which was
 established in 1876; it was not until the 1960s, during the
 administration of Dr. A. I. Thomas, the university's president,
 that a committee was formed to begin the process of incorporating
 the area adjacent to the university into the City of Prairie
 View; and
 WHEREAS, In February of 1969, the articles of
 incorporation were approved for the city of 5,000 citizens, and
 The Prairie View City News, a bimonthly newspaper, was
 established that spring; at the time of its founding, the city
 was dependent on the university for fire protection, ambulance
 service, and medical services; and
 WHEREAS, In 1970, Prairie View consisted of the Waller
 Independent School District junior high school, five churches,
 two gas stations, a bus station, a beauty parlor, a barbershop, a
 grocery store, and a cafeteria; Eristus Sams, a farmer, was
 elected mayor of the city; and
 WHEREAS, Today, Prairie View's Economic Development
 Corporation promotes the area as a choice business location for
 national and international firms and helps companies that are
 relocating to the region to find the site best suited to their
 needs; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
 Legislature, hereby congratulate the citizens of Prairie View on
 their city's rich history and on the quality of life it now
 affords area residents and express best wishes to all on the
 occasion of Prairie View's 40th birthday; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
 honor of the City of Prairie View.
