| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Vernon Newsom on the occasion of his retirement as |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | superintendent of the Mansfield Independent School District in |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | June of 2009, after a career in education spanning some 35 years; |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Vernon Newsom became superintendent of the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Mansfield Independent School District in 1996; he served |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | previously as a teacher, principal, and director in the district |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | for 13 years and as the superintendent of the Wimberley |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Independent School District for seven years; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Under Mr. Newsom's leadership, 19 of the Mansfield |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Independent School District's 36 campuses have received an |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Exemplary or Recognized rating, and the district's math and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | reading initiatives have proved successful; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, During Mr. Newsom's tenure, the community has |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | overwhelmingly passed six bond packages, and since 2000, Mr. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Newsom has overseen the construction of 24 new campuses, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | including three high schools, a new administration building, a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | facilities complex, a new transportation building, and the Ben |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Barber Career Tech Academy; he also oversaw the creation of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Mansfield Independent School District Education Foundation, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | which was formed in 1998 and has contributed more than $1.6 |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | million to fund innovative education projects in the district; |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The Mansfield Independent School District has |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | earned an excellent reputation and has been listed consistently |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | among the fastest-growing school districts in the state, in great |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | part because of Vernon Newsom's exceptional efforts in promoting |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the goals of the district and improving student achievement; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, A consummate professional, Mr. Newsom is active |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | in many professional and community organizations, and he is |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | recognized for his outstanding leadership and his reliable |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | judgment; he has had a positive influence on the lives of many |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | students and members of the faculty and staff, and his presence |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | in the Mansfield Independent School District will be greatly |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | missed; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby commend Vernon Newsom for his outstanding |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | contributions to the educational system of the Mansfield |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Independent School District and the State of Texas and extend to |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | him best wishes in all his future endeavors; and, be it further |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
