SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 626
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Vernon Newsom on the occasion of his retirement as
superintendent of the Mansfield Independent School District in
June of 2009, after a career in education spanning some 35 years;
and
WHEREAS, Vernon Newsom became superintendent of the
Mansfield Independent School District in 1996; he served
previously as a teacher, principal, and director in the district
for 13 years and as the superintendent of the Wimberley
Independent School District for seven years; and
WHEREAS, Under Mr. Newsom's leadership, 19 of the Mansfield
Independent School District's 36 campuses have received an
Exemplary or Recognized rating, and the district's math and
reading initiatives have proved successful; and
WHEREAS, During Mr. Newsom's tenure, the community has
overwhelmingly passed six bond packages, and since 2000, Mr.
Newsom has overseen the construction of 24 new campuses,
including three high schools, a new administration building, a
facilities complex, a new transportation building, and the Ben
Barber Career Tech Academy; he also oversaw the creation of the
Mansfield Independent School District Education Foundation,
which was formed in 1998 and has contributed more than $1.6
million to fund innovative education projects in the district;
and
WHEREAS, The Mansfield Independent School District has
earned an excellent reputation and has been listed consistently
among the fastest-growing school districts in the state, in great
part because of Vernon Newsom's exceptional efforts in promoting
the goals of the district and improving student achievement; and
WHEREAS, A consummate professional, Mr. Newsom is active
in many professional and community organizations, and he is
recognized for his outstanding leadership and his reliable
judgment; he has had a positive influence on the lives of many
students and members of the faculty and staff, and his presence
in the Mansfield Independent School District will be greatly
missed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
Legislature, hereby commend Vernon Newsom for his outstanding
contributions to the educational system of the Mansfield
Independent School District and the State of Texas and extend to
him best wishes in all his future endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
