11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 646
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Yolanda Garcia Olivarez, who has been selected as a
44 2009 Texas Sor Juana Women of Achievement honoree; and
55 WHEREAS, Sor Juana Ins de la Cruz was a 17th-century
66 Mexican nun, poet, mathematician, and brilliant intellectual who
77 challenged her culture and religion with her belief that women
88 have a right to an education and creative freedom; and
99 WHEREAS, Yolanda Olivarez, a senior vice president at
1010 Wells Fargo, has been active in many Corpus Christi community
1111 groups through the years; she served for 12 years as a Corpus
1212 Christi port commissioner and has worked with such diverse
1313 organizations as the American Heart Association, the Coastal
1414 Bend Bays and Estuaries Program, and the Del Mar College
1515 Foundation; and
1616 WHEREAS, She worked with the Corpus Christi Community
1717 Development Corporation in partnership with other groups to aid
1818 many Corpus Christi families in acquiring homes of their own; she
1919 is a devoted wife to her husband, Rolando Olivarez, and a loving
2020 mother to her daughter, Sophia Olivarez; and
2121 WHEREAS, Yolanda Olivarez has exemplified the courage,
2222 creativity, and determination of Sor Juana Ins de la Cruz, and
2323 she is truly deserving of this prestigious award; now, therefore,
2424 be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
2626 Legislature, hereby commend Yolanda Garcia Olivarez on her many
2727 accomplishments and extend congratulations to her on being named
2828 a 2009 Texas Sor Juana Woman of Achievement; and, be it further
2929 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3030 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
