SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 646 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Yolanda Garcia Olivarez, who has been selected as a 2009 Texas Sor Juana Women of Achievement honoree; and WHEREAS, Sor Juana Ins de la Cruz was a 17th-century Mexican nun, poet, mathematician, and brilliant intellectual who challenged her culture and religion with her belief that women have a right to an education and creative freedom; and WHEREAS, Yolanda Olivarez, a senior vice president at Wells Fargo, has been active in many Corpus Christi community groups through the years; she served for 12 years as a Corpus Christi port commissioner and has worked with such diverse organizations as the American Heart Association, the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program, and the Del Mar College Foundation; and WHEREAS, She worked with the Corpus Christi Community Development Corporation in partnership with other groups to aid many Corpus Christi families in acquiring homes of their own; she is a devoted wife to her husband, Rolando Olivarez, and a loving mother to her daughter, Sophia Olivarez; and WHEREAS, Yolanda Olivarez has exemplified the courage, creativity, and determination of Sor Juana Ins de la Cruz, and she is truly deserving of this prestigious award; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend Yolanda Garcia Olivarez on her many accomplishments and extend congratulations to her on being named a 2009 Texas Sor Juana Woman of Achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
