| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join citizens across the state in celebrating January 28, 2009, |

| 4 | 4 | | as Data Privacy Day in Texas; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Internet and related technologies now connect |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | more than 1.4 billion people around the world and provide |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | unprecedented opportunities to share information, expand |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | knowledge, and improve quality of life; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Data Privacy Day represents an international |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | effort among nearly 30 nations to raise awareness of the issues |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | surrounding confidentiality and the protection of personal |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | information on the Internet; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In keeping with the fact that many people are |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | unaware of data protection and privacy laws, educators and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | privacy professionals are encouraged to speak on these issues |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with young people in schools across the nation and to provide |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | them with the tools they need to protect themselves; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Data Privacy Day will help to ensure that citizens |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | are informed of the potential consequences of their online |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | activities and that they can take advantage of the benefits of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the Internet without putting their privacy at risk; now, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | therefore, be it |

| 23 | 23 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Legislature, hereby call on all Texans to be aware of data |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | privacy concerns, to take steps to protect their personal |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | information online, and to observe Data Privacy Day as a means to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | help disseminate information regarding this essential issue; |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and, be it further |

| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
