SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 68 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join citizens across the state in celebrating January 28, 2009, as Data Privacy Day in Texas; and WHEREAS, The Internet and related technologies now connect more than 1.4 billion people around the world and provide unprecedented opportunities to share information, expand knowledge, and improve quality of life; and WHEREAS, Data Privacy Day represents an international effort among nearly 30 nations to raise awareness of the issues surrounding confidentiality and the protection of personal information on the Internet; and WHEREAS, In keeping with the fact that many people are unaware of data protection and privacy laws, educators and privacy professionals are encouraged to speak on these issues with young people in schools across the nation and to provide them with the tools they need to protect themselves; and WHEREAS, Data Privacy Day will help to ensure that citizens are informed of the potential consequences of their online activities and that they can take advantage of the benefits of the Internet without putting their privacy at risk; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby call on all Texans to be aware of data privacy concerns, to take steps to protect their personal information online, and to observe Data Privacy Day as a means to help disseminate information regarding this essential issue; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this important day.
