44 Bruce Montgomery Withers, Jr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of The Woodlands in mourning the loss of Bruce
77 Montgomery Withers, Jr., who died April 13, 2009, at the age of
88 82; and
99 WHEREAS, Bruce Withers was a retired oil and gas industry
1010 executive who had lived in The Woodlands for more than 30 years;
1111 he was involved in many civic organizations and was a member of
1212 the first board of directors of the Town Center Improvement
1313 District for which he served as vice chairman for 12 years; and
1414 WHEREAS, A man of deep faith, he was instrumental in
1515 building the religious community in The Woodlands; he had been a
1616 deacon of the First Baptist Church of The Woodlands since 1978
1717 and served on the board of directors for Interfaith of The
1818 Woodlands; he was known for his good will and his good works and
1919 for an unassuming nature that endeared him to all who knew him;
2020 the community recognized him as its Hometown Hero in 2006; and
2121 WHEREAS, He was born in Stockdale, Texas, on October 11,
2222 1926; he postponed his college career to serve his country during
2323 World War II; he volunteered for the Army Air Force cadet program
2424 in June of 1944 and served primarily in the first wave of
2525 occupation troops in Tokyo, Japan; in 1950 he married Ruby Mae
2626 Lindholm and they spent 58 years together; and
2727 WHEREAS, Following his military service, Mr. Withers
2828 enrolled at Texas A&I University and earned a bachelor of science
2929 degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering; he was an active
3030 alumnus in his alma mater; he served as president of the alumni
3131 association and received the university's Distinguished Alumni
3232 Award; and
3333 WHEREAS, He had a successful career that spanned some 47
3434 years and included working at Tenneco Oil Company and serving as
3535 president of Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation and as
3636 chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of
3737 Trident NGL, Incorporated; during his career, he held leadership
3838 positions with a number of professional associations and
3939 received the prestigious Hanlon Award from the Gas Processors
4040 Association in 1990; after retiring in 1997, he continued to
4141 serve on several boards of directors; and
4242 WHEREAS, Bruce Withers will long be remembered for his
4343 civic leadership and his commitment to The Woodlands community,
4444 for his generosity of spirit, and for his devotion to his family;
4545 a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves behind
4646 memories that will be treasured forever by all those whose lives
4747 he touched; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
4949 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5050 family of Bruce Montgomery Withers, Jr.: his wife of 58 years,
5151 Ruby Lindholm Withers; his daughter, Robin Withers Winegar and
5252 her husband, Richard; and his grandson, Andrew Winegar; and, be
5353 it further
5454 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5555 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5656 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5757 memory of Bruce Montgomery Withers, Jr.
