SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 740 In Memory of Bruce Montgomery Withers, Jr. WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of The Woodlands in mourning the loss of Bruce Montgomery Withers, Jr., who died April 13, 2009, at the age of 82; and WHEREAS, Bruce Withers was a retired oil and gas industry executive who had lived in The Woodlands for more than 30 years; he was involved in many civic organizations and was a member of the first board of directors of the Town Center Improvement District for which he served as vice chairman for 12 years; and WHEREAS, A man of deep faith, he was instrumental in building the religious community in The Woodlands; he had been a deacon of the First Baptist Church of The Woodlands since 1978 and served on the board of directors for Interfaith of The Woodlands; he was known for his good will and his good works and for an unassuming nature that endeared him to all who knew him; the community recognized him as its Hometown Hero in 2006; and WHEREAS, He was born in Stockdale, Texas, on October 11, 1926; he postponed his college career to serve his country during World War II; he volunteered for the Army Air Force cadet program in June of 1944 and served primarily in the first wave of occupation troops in Tokyo, Japan; in 1950 he married Ruby Mae Lindholm and they spent 58 years together; and WHEREAS, Following his military service, Mr. Withers enrolled at Texas A&I University and earned a bachelor of science degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering; he was an active alumnus in his alma mater; he served as president of the alumni association and received the university's Distinguished Alumni Award; and WHEREAS, He had a successful career that spanned some 47 years and included working at Tenneco Oil Company and serving as president of Mitchell Energy and Development Corporation and as chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Trident NGL, Incorporated; during his career, he held leadership positions with a number of professional associations and received the prestigious Hanlon Award from the Gas Processors Association in 1990; after retiring in 1997, he continued to serve on several boards of directors; and WHEREAS, Bruce Withers will long be remembered for his civic leadership and his commitment to The Woodlands community, for his generosity of spirit, and for his devotion to his family; a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by all those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Bruce Montgomery Withers, Jr.: his wife of 58 years, Ruby Lindholm Withers; his daughter, Robin Withers Winegar and her husband, Richard; and his grandson, Andrew Winegar; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bruce Montgomery Withers, Jr. Williams ________________________________ President of the Senate I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on April 27, 2009, by a rising vote. ________________________________ Secretary of the Senate ________________________________ Member, Texas Senate
