| 11 | 11 | | higher education to firefighters enrolled in certain courses. |

| 12 | 12 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 13 | 13 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 54, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | amended by adding Section 54.2082 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Sec. 54.2082. FIRE SCIENCE TUITION EXEMPTION ADVISORY |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | COMMITTEE. (a) The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | shall establish an advisory committee to develop recommendations |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | for the implementation of the tuition exemption for students |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | enrolled in courses offered as part of a fire science curriculum |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | offered under Section 54.208, as amended by Chapters 1285 (H.B. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 2013) and 1299 (H.B. 2347), Acts of the 81st Legislature, Regular |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Session, 2009, including a determination of the definition and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | scope of fire science curriculum. |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | (b) The advisory committee must be composed of members from |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | institutions of higher education, experts in the fire sciences, and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | firefighters. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (c) The advisory committee may request the cooperation and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | assistance of state agencies in preparing recommendations under |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | this section. |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (d) Not later than September 1, 2012, the advisory committee |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | shall issue a report of its recommendations to the lieutenant |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | governor, the speaker of the house, each standing committee of the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | legislature with jurisdiction over higher education, and the Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Higher Education Coordinating Board. |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | (e) This section expires January 1, 2013. |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2011. |
