99 AN ACT
1010 relating to the tuition exemption offered by public institutions of
1111 higher education to firefighters enrolled in certain courses.
1212 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1313 SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 54, Education Code, is
1414 amended by adding Section 54.2082 to read as follows:
1515 Sec. 54.2082. FIRE SCIENCE TUITION EXEMPTION ADVISORY
1616 COMMITTEE. (a) The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
1717 shall establish an advisory committee to develop recommendations
1818 for the implementation of the tuition exemption for students
1919 enrolled in courses offered as part of a fire science curriculum
2020 offered under Section 54.208, as amended by Chapters 1285 (H.B.
2121 2013) and 1299 (H.B. 2347), Acts of the 81st Legislature, Regular
2222 Session, 2009, including a determination of the definition and
2323 scope of fire science curriculum.
2424 (b) The advisory committee must be composed of members from
2525 institutions of higher education, experts in the fire sciences, and
2626 firefighters.
2727 (c) The advisory committee may request the cooperation and
2828 assistance of state agencies in preparing recommendations under
2929 this section.
3030 (d) Not later than September 1, 2012, the advisory committee
3131 shall issue a report of its recommendations to the lieutenant
3232 governor, the speaker of the house, each standing committee of the
3333 legislature with jurisdiction over higher education, and the Texas
3434 Higher Education Coordinating Board.
3535 (e) This section expires January 1, 2013.
3636 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3737 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3838 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3939 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4040 Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
