| 13 | 13 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 14 | 14 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 521, Transportation Code, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | is amended by adding Section 521.1235 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Sec. 521.1235. DESIGNATOR ON LICENSE ISSUED TO VETERAN. |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (a) In this section, "veteran" means a person who: |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (1) has served in: |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | (A) the army, navy, air force, coast guard, or |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | marine corps of the United States; or |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (B) the Texas National Guard as defined by |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Section 431.001, Government Code; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | (2) has been honorably discharged from the branch of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the service in which the person served. |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (b) The department shall include the designation "VETERAN" |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | on a driver's license issued to a veteran in an available space |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | either on the face of the driver's license or on the reverse side of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the driver's license if: |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (1) the veteran requests the designation; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (2) the veteran provides proof of the veteran's |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | military service and honorable discharge. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 2. Section 521.142, Transportation Code, is amended |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | by adding Subsection (i) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | (i) The application must provide space for the applicant: |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | (1) to voluntarily list any military service that may |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | qualify the applicant to receive a license with a veteran's |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | designation under Section 521.1235; and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | (2) to include proof required by the department to |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | determine the applicant's eligibility to receive that designation. |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2011. |
