99 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1010 AN ACT
1111 relating to the issuance to veterans of specially marked driver's
1212 licenses.
1313 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1414 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 521, Transportation Code,
1515 is amended by adding Section 521.1235 to read as follows:
1616 Sec. 521.1235. DESIGNATOR ON LICENSE ISSUED TO VETERAN.
1717 (a) In this section, "veteran" means a person who:
1818 (1) has served in:
1919 (A) the army, navy, air force, coast guard, or
2020 marine corps of the United States; or
2121 (B) the Texas National Guard as defined by
2222 Section 431.001, Government Code; and
2323 (2) has been honorably discharged from the branch of
2424 the service in which the person served.
2525 (b) The department shall include the designation "VETERAN"
2626 on a driver's license issued to a veteran in an available space
2727 either on the face of the driver's license or on the reverse side of
2828 the driver's license if:
2929 (1) the veteran requests the designation; and
3030 (2) the veteran provides proof of the veteran's
3131 military service and honorable discharge.
3232 SECTION 2. Section 521.142, Transportation Code, is amended
3333 by adding Subsection (i) to read as follows:
3434 (i) The application must provide space for the applicant:
3535 (1) to voluntarily list any military service that may
3636 qualify the applicant to receive a license with a veteran's
3737 designation under Section 521.1235; and
3838 (2) to include proof required by the department to
3939 determine the applicant's eligibility to receive that designation.
4040 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2011.
