H.C.R. No. 109 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Since its founding, the Bedichek Junior Marine Corps has proven to be a positive force in helping students at Bedichek Middle School in Austin prepare for the future; and WHEREAS, Now in its fifth year, the program serves 167 participants, nearly quadrupling in size since its first class of 44 students in 2006; the BJMC is designed to instill the values of citizenship, service, and personal responsibility in its cadets as well as provide them with a sense of accomplishment; the program is open to Bedichek students in the sixth through eighth grades and helps participants develop leadership skills, build character, and learn effective self-discipline; the cadets are guided by Staff Sergeant Darrick Norton, a former marine and a member of the school's faculty; and WHEREAS, This innovative program requires its cadets to pass all their courses, demonstrate high moral standards, and adhere to a strict code of conduct; no commitment to future military service is required of BJMC cadets, and the lessons taught by the program are intended to benefit them in all walks of life; and WHEREAS, The Bedichek Junior Marine Corps program helps young people develop a wide range of important skills and values, and it is a pleasure to recognize its contributions; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor the Bedichek Junior Marine Corps for its role in developing informed, responsible citizens and extend to all those involved with the program sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the BJMC as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
