10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, In the global economy of the 21st century, the |

11 | 11 | | establishment of business links to countries outside the United |

12 | 12 | | States is of growing importance to the State of Texas, and areas |
---|
13 | 13 | | that figure prominently in this type of development contribute |
---|
14 | 14 | | greatly to the state's commercial progress; and |

15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, One especially fertile location for the growth of |
---|
16 | 16 | | international business is the city of Richardson; long a center for |
---|
17 | 17 | | computer and communications technology and the site of many |
---|
18 | 18 | | divisional or regional corporate headquarters, Richardson has also |
---|
19 | 19 | | attracted more than 30 companies from foreign countries; the firms |
---|
20 | 20 | | hail from 15 nations around the globe, including Canada, China, |
---|
21 | 21 | | Finland, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United |
---|
22 | 22 | | Kingdom; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, These enterprises compete in a variety of |
---|
24 | 24 | | industries; while many specialize in technology-oriented fields |
---|
25 | 25 | | such as semiconductor manufacturing, telecommunications, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | software development, others focus on workforce management, |
---|
27 | 27 | | security, air transportation, and heating, ventilation, and air |
---|
28 | 28 | | conditioning, among numerous other endeavors; and |

29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The city has also been chosen as a base of operations |

30 | 30 | | for domestic companies that maintain operations abroad; these firms |

31 | 31 | | further Richardson's involvement in international business and |
---|
32 | 32 | | allow area residents to benefit from the opportunities available in |
---|
33 | 33 | | foreign markets; and |

34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, To build on the city's connection to global |

35 | 35 | | commerce, civic leaders are opening the Mayor's Office of |
---|
36 | 36 | | International Business, a partnership between the City of |
---|
37 | 37 | | Richardson and the Richardson Chamber of Commerce, and the chamber |
---|
38 | 38 | | is also establishing a new Richardson International Business |

39 | 39 | | Advisory Committee; these initiatives are designed to attract |

40 | 40 | | investment by companies from other countries, to support locally |

41 | 41 | | based firms seeking to develop their business abroad, and to open |

50 | 50 | | multicultural character; Richardson is home to people from a broad |

51 | 51 | | range of backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions and offers a |

52 | 52 | | vibrant mix of restaurants, specialty stores, and places of worship |

53 | 53 | | that reflects the diversity of the population; in addition, |

54 | 54 | | cultural centers such as the Raindrop Turkish House and the Dallas |

55 | 55 | | Chinese Community Center further the cosmopolitan environment; and |

56 | 56 | | WHEREAS, With its emphasis on developing international |
---|
57 | 57 | | business as an important component of the local economy, Richardson |
---|
58 | 58 | | stands as an admirable model for the way that Texas communities can |

59 | 59 | | compete and prosper in the decades ahead, and its achievements are |

60 | 60 | | indeed deserving of special legislative recognition; now, |

62 | 62 | | RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas |
